I believe that the rulebook says the ghoul stars were void of life before the tyranids came. There was an ancient race there for awhile, and whatever happened to them it couldn't have been good. That's about all I know.

In the space marine codex there is a paragraph about the death spectres

'stationed beyond the bounds of the imperium, the death spectres maintain constant vigil to ensure that the supernatural inhabitants of the ghoul stars never threaten the galaxy again'

what they will do if they do i dont't know but thats the only written fluff i know about, it's probably not a very nice place tbh

They are a place filled with malignant aliens like Cythor Fiends, Togoran Bloodreeks, and the Necron Flayed One kingdom.

I've always thought the Ghoul Stars where a no-go zone, an area haunted by unconceivable evils noone in their senses would dare to provoke.

Nothing to do with Tyranids (who are not from this galaxy, to begin with).

IIRC the ghoul stars in the north-east are rather similar to the halo stars in the west. The distance between the single stars is enormous and the warp is getting 'thin'. St Macharius tried to conquer them but the further he gets the worse gets the mental situation of his men a.k.a. the soldiers are getting mad and he had to cancel his campaign.

Playing mostly Necromunda and Battletech, Malifaux is awesome too!

It's yet another bastion of Lovecraftian horror in the galaxy, with a team of hard-core dudes you won't find anywhere else keeping them at bay... or, at least, keeping everyone else the hell out.

Kinda, sorta, though the Night's Watch wishes they could be Space Marines.

They could use the Plot Armour...

Mind you, give them the resources of the IG and they could enact an obsidian exterminatus

I always thought they were a bunch of planets that were inhabited by the worst of the inhabitants, like a long forgotten race of sub-humans that lived there. Either that or a whole bunch of Necron Tombworlds that no one knew about and anyone that goes there will die.

Well, the Flayed Ones do have a "home base" hidden on one/some of the worlds in the region known as the Ghoul Stars, but there's a bunch of other things that are mentioned only by name that are, apparently, some kinds of freak-nasty Xeno BAMFs.

Ghoul Stars were filled with odd Alien baddies. Until Helbrecht rose to High Marshal and put a crusade on them .

In current fluff, they apparently still are, since the Necron Flayed One Empire is still there and the Silver Skulls are still holding the line on the borders. This isnt to say the BTs didnt crusade and clear out a part of it or something... space, see, is really big....

Not exactly he arrived in the homesystems and didn't find anything. He only put down the Cythor Fiends not the other empires. The Flayed Ones, Hrud, and the Shapeshifter races are still there including another hive fleet which is actually mutated immensely. Three chapters in fluff are posted there, in DYI, only five other chapters are posted there, not only that but also a few plagues and the Enslaver virus which was pretty bloody bad happened. Then a few other wars, IE Don't go to the ghoul stars they will screw you over.
If I have read correctly the cythor fiends still exist because apparently they couldn't find the actual homeworld it is assumed they did, (By people who like to stomp down theories), Cythor Fiends are dangerous, Alot of Renegades like to go there, and a few rouge Ad Mechs go there.

From whom are unforgiven we bring the mercy of war.
