Fort Wayne, IN

Greetings Dakka! Have been getting in a few games with my Necrons in recent weeks, and I figured I'd share a report of tonight's game. My list uses a lot of the same philosophies as jy2's MTO 'Crons, with some close combat punch swapped out for heavy dakka.

My List
Spoiler:
Necron Overlord (CCB [Gauss], Warscythe, MSS)
Cryptek (HoD): Eldritch Lance, Solar Pulse

Necron Overlord (CCB [Gauss], Warscythe, MSS)
Cryptek (HoD): Eldritch Lance, Solar Pulse

Triarch Stalker (Heat Ray) x 2

Warrior x 5

Warrior x 5

Warrior x 5

Warrior x 5

Scarabs x 9

Wraiths x 3 (2 Coils)

Wraiths x 3 (1 Coil)

Doomsday Ark x 3

I was playing against my friend Mike and his Dark Eldar over at Books Comics and Things in the Fort Wayne area. I was caught a little off guard, having expected him to bring his own Necrons, but I wasn't about to turn down a challenge. UPDATE: Dark Eldar list added. Not being particularly familiar with Dark Eldar, I wasn't sure what upgrades were purchased and what came standard, so there are probably mistakes and stuff.

Spoiler:

Drazhar, Master of Blades

Haemonculus (Liquifier Gun x2)
Haemonculus (Liquifier Gun)

Incubi x 5
Venom (Splinter Cannon)

Mandrake x7 (Nightfiend)

Wracks x 4

2 x Kabalite Warriors x 10 (Sybarite: Blast Pistol, Agonizer), (Blaster, Dark Lance)
2 x Raider

Wyches x 10 (Hekatrix) (Haywire Grenades)
Raider

Scourges x 5 (Dark Lance x2)

Reavers x 6 (Heat Lance x1, Cluster Caltrops x 2)

Ravager

Cronos Parasite Engine (Spirit Vortex)

Talos Pain Engine (TL Heat Lance)

Please note that I don't have a dedicated camera, so I'm using my phone. Some pictures may be blurry or poor quality as a result. This is also my first battle report, and I foolishly forgot to bring a notepad, so I will probably forget some details. Without further ado, let's get to it!

Deployment:
Spoiler:

Overview of the map and terrain. We played the big blob of trees in the middle as BLOS:

Mission was Capture and Control, Deployment was Dawn of War. Objectives are the clear plastic discs - mine is visible in the middle ruin, his is in the tall building in the top left. Mike wins the roll-off to determine who goes first, and cedes the first turn to me. Smart move, as I have to waste a turn of shooting and it will give him the last turn to contest objectives. I deploy only two squads of Warriors, both led by Crypteks. My first squad deploys behind the altar to the left, directly across from his vehicle (note the model outside is just being used to represent what's in the vehicle.

My second squad deploys in the tower off to the right of the field.

I leave two squads of Warriors in reserve, and Mike elects to outflank a unit of Mandrakes.
Mike does not attempt to seize the initiative.

Necron Turn 1
Spoiler:
My forces come in from my table edge, per the Dawn of War rules.

I stupidly forget to move my Cryptek into LoS of his vehicle and don't fire anything . My CCB's flat out 24", Wraiths and Scarabs move their full distance and run. Stalkers and Doomsday Arks set up for bombardment.

Dark Eldar Turn 1

Spoiler:
Everything but his Mandrakes comes onto the board. Most of his transports flat out.

He attempts to take a few potshots at my CCBs, but Quantum Shielding negates it. He doesn't have range to assault.

Necron Turn 2

Spoiler:
Here's where things start to heat up. My first squad of Warrior reserves comes in and deploys near my objective. My Triarch Stalker, Doomsday Ark, and Warrior squad set up to nuke his bikes.

Impressively, three bikes survive the bombardment.

I managed to wreck Drazhar's transport with a Sweep Attack, and he spills out with his Incubi. Wraiths on the left move up, the ones on the right were forced to run and so will not be assaulting this turn.

My other CCB sweeps another of his transports, managing a single Weapon Destroyed result after cover saves.

Left Wraith squad makes it into assault with Drazhar and his Incubi. I manage to kill only one of the Incubi, while losing two Wraiths (after Fearless wounds). I fear I've overestimated my Wraith's survivability....

Dark Eldar Turn 2

Spoiler:
I declare a Solar Pulse.

Dark Eldar bikes perform their own sweep attack on my Scarabs....

And fail to cause a single Wound.

I make a mistake here, and it's a big one. I forgot his Wyches could disembark after moving 12" (fast and open-topped....), putting them well within striking range of my rightmost Doomsday Ark. Naturally, they're equipped with Haywire Grenades.

Of course, it turns out to be unnecessary, since his vehicle blows up my Ark with a Lance. I roll 1" for the explosion, doing nothing to his squad. His Wyches instead charge my Triarch Stalker, which they wreck.

Dark Eldar shooting puts 2W on my Wraiths, which I was able to split up with wound allocation shenanigans.

To my amazement, the Wraith in combat with Drazhar survives, taking only 1W!

Ouch! Turn 2 was a nasty one for me. I lost a good 400 points of models while his own losses were minimal. On the other hand, I've managed to lock Drazhar in melee for my other Wraiths to charge. I need to turn this game around fast to have a chance at winning.

Necron Turn 3

Spoiler:
I stupidly forget to take pictures during the moving and shooting phases. My middle Doomsday Ark and rightmost Warrior group took some potshots at the Wyches to try and take them down, but they proved surprisingly resilient (5 left of the original 9). My leftmost Doomsday Ark killed his flying heavy weapons guys (I don't remember their names) in one devastating blast. On to Assault!

My Scarabs easily wreck his jetbikes and consolidate forward.

My other Wraith squad charges Drazhar and Co. Incredibly, they wipe out Drazhar's squad and take not a single Wound! Drazhar whiffs horribly with all of his attacks.

A look at the surviving Wyches, who are going to munch my other Ark.

A much better turn for me, all in all, but I'm resigned to losing my other Ark next turn. I need to put those Wyches down, hard.

Dark Eldar Turn 3

Spoiler:
I declare I'm using a Solar Pulse again.

As expected, his Wyches toast my middle Doomsday Ark. His Mandrake squad comes in and sweeps my left-field Warriors. They consolidate away from each other, as they're within easy striking distance of my Doomsday Ark.

Dark Eldar shooting nukes one of my Command Barges - that Overlord is now on foot, within possible striking range of both the Talos and Kronos. Not a good place to be, all in all.

Wraiths again manage not only to survive, but thrive, as Drazhar whiffs all of his attacks. In return, the Wraiths put 2W on Drazhar.

I'm still in a tight spot - I have control of my own objective, but I've got nothing in range to take the other objective. I need to secure my own deployment zone if I want to bag this game.

Necron Turn 4

Spoiler:
My other unit of Warriors comes in, catching the Wyches in a veritable firestorm of Gauss Flayer fire. When the smoke clears, the Wyches are no more than smoke on the breeze.

FYI: his vehicle is supposed to be perched on the ruins next to the Warriors. It wouldn't stay up, though, so he just set it off to the side. Rapid fire Gauss and a single Eldritch Lance fails to do any permanent damage.

Mandrakes survive the fury of the Doomsday Ark main cannon with half their squad. They pass their Leadership test.

I move and run with my Scarabs - looks like they've got range to charge!

Overlord on foot decides to challenge the Kronos Parasite Engine to a duel. Embarked Overlord attempts a Sweep Attack as a distraction, but fails to get the abomination's attention.

Scarabs fearlessly charge into combat. "For the EMPROAR!!!"

The Talos pain engine mercilessly mows down several Scarabs, while the mechanical constructs concentrate their attacks on the skimmer - which explodes, spilling out Wracks and killing yet more Scarabs. After Fearless saves are made, there are only two Scarab bases remaining.

Drazhar finally falls to the Wraiths, who consolidate towards combat with the Kronos Engine. Kronos passes its Mindshackle Test, and puts 2W on the Overlord, who whiffs in return.

Getting my Wraiths free at this critical juncture is a big break for me, and I don't intend to miss this chance. I just need to keep his units away from my deployment zone now, as his troops aren't anywhere near his own objective.

Dark Eldar Turn 4

Spoiler:
I've forgotten about the unit of troops in the top right corner of the board. They flat out to be within striking range of my objective for turn 5. I need to shut that unit down before that can happen. Unfortunately, Mike has used cheesy placement of his Mandrakes to shut down my Doomsday Ark's firing, so I'm limited to a single Triarch Stalker and some Warriors.

Triarch Stalker manages to hit the vehicle for twin-linking, which enables my squad with attached Cryptek to pop the vehicle open. I have rapid-fire range to them from my troops on the objective, and manage to kill enough to force a leadership test....

Which the Dark Eldar fail!!! They run 7" away from my objective. This is a tremendous break for me, as it gives me another chance at victory.

Mike's Wracks and Talos whiff a lot of attacks against my Scarabs, killing only one base with an extra Wound after Fearless saves. Returning the favor, the Scarab whiffs all of its own attacks.

Mike also manages to put down one of my Wraiths with shooting. The Kronos passes its Mindshackle Test, but is unable to hurt my Overlord (who also returns the favor - polite Necrons, who'd have thought?)

I caught a huge break this turn, I just need to keep the pressure on and secure both objectives.

Necron Turn 5

Spoiler:
This could be the final turn! I need to make it count.

To my opponent's surprise, I move my Wraiths away from the Kronos Engine and towards the Talos. My other Overlord also disembarks and prepares to lead the assault. The Necrons charge in to battle!

Overlord and leftmost Wraith put down the Talos with 2W returned to the Overlord. Other Wraiths and Scarab manage to put down the Wracks, leaving only a single Haemonculus with 1W remaining.

Meanwhile, the other Overlord and Kronos continue to clash - the Kronos fails its Mindshackle test, but doesn't hurt itself. The Overlord puts 2W on the beast.

Dark Eldar Turn 5

Spoiler:
To my discomfort, the fleeing Dark Eldar rally and march back towards my objective.

Dark Eldar lances wreck my last Command Barge.

The Overlord and Kronos Engine continue to duke it out, with no Wounds dealt on either side.

The Wraiths, Scarab, and Overlord manage to finish off the Haemonculus with disdainful ease.

His warrior unit marches back towards my objective, getting in their full move. He runs an additional 3" on top of that. We can both tell he's within assault range, but he needs to assault through difficult terrain.

We measure it out and he needs 4" to close with my troops. He rolls for difficult terrain....

...and gets a one.

At this point, we roll to see if the game continues...

...and it doesn't. I have one objective under my control, and am contesting the other. Victory to the Necrons!

Triple Arks ARE scary. That being said, they didn't perform as well in this game as they have in the last two or three games - although that's largely because I underestimated Mike's Wyches. I think I may drop an Ark so I can bump my Wraith squads up to 5 or 6 each, though, for some added flexibility and I think it will mesh better with my army fluff (2 Overlords who are brothers and can't agree on the best way to exterminate squishies...).

Great battle report. Just one thing in the Necron FAQ it says cover saves are not permitted against sweep attacks so for future reference you can do a lot more damage.

INCLUDING cover saves from moving flat out? I didn't even consider it at the time, but....that's pretty nasty. Yikes.

Nice battle. I like your writing style!

How are 3 doomsday arks working for you? To me, they seem like a little too much but then again, I've never used one before (though I have played against it).

Well, the nice thing about having 3 Arks is that they're a fantastic psychological deterrent, and if I need to, I can move one of the Arks about for better position while the other two blast away. The extra redundancy is nice, too. They synergize incredibly well with Triarch Stalkers, too - in the last two games I played with both Stalkers and Arks, my Arks have only scattered about twice (that is, scattered in such a way as to cause a miss).

The real selling point of the Arks, though, is board control (at least for me it is). Deploying even one Ark does interesting things to your opponent's own deployment. Deploy two or three, and you can monitor every lane of approach to your own deployment zone while breaking up your opponent's deployment (so he can avoid your Arks). Divide and conquer, I always say. Of course, if you do end up deploying second, you get a bunch of free shots at your foe.

All that being said though, I think I will drop the third Ark for more Wraiths. Two seems to be the magic number for the Necron Codex, and I think the extra flexibility and close combat punch of more Wraiths will serve me better than the extra firepower of a third Ark (which admittedly rarely makes back its points).

But coversaves ARE allowed against Bladevanes? That's fair... :eyeroll:

Good news. This is the best time in the hobby. Full of promise. GW lets us down each time and we know it but secretly we're hoping that this is the edition that GW gives us a balanced game that can also be played competitively at tournaments. I'm loving it.

Did you make sure to have the haywire hitting the triarch on 6s? It seems like it would be hard to get a wreck

Hitting on 6's and only 1 grenade attack per model. It's very hard to kill walkers with them but you may get lucky with open topped stalkers.

Confused...why are they hitting the walker on sixes? Is this some obscure rule i'm missing?

Walkers are only hit by grenades on 6's in CC, just like a vehicle that moved over 6". One attack per model. When using normal melee weapons, you fight using normal number of attacks and compared WS.

Well I'll be. That would have changed things up considerably - the Stalker would likely have held the Wyches in combat for at least a couple of turns, giving me time to get my second Ark out of charge range.

To be fair, I've only recently gotten into the 40k hobby. I had the opportunity to playtest what I wanted to buy using Mike's own 'Crons and proxies, so I had a pretty solid idea of what I needed before I started buying. I'm not certain if Mike had that opportunity or not - he fields what he's got available, and tbh I'm not certain whether his intention was to make a competitive list. Me, I tend to be pretty competitive.

With all of that being said though, in the next couple of days I should have another battle report up with Mike's Dark Eldar - a grudge match! I think everyone will be interested by the outcome.

SevenSins wrote:three arks seems like a fun idea, but a bit point heavy for my tastes

Well, like I said earlier, I'm considering dropping an Ark so I can field 2 five or six man blobs of Wraiths when I have some money. The firepower from the third Ark is almost never really necessary, and three Wraiths tend to drop just that little bit too quickly. Plus, you might have noticed there's a strong theme of twos in this list - two surfboard lords, two stalkers, two wraithflights...it just seems to me that Necrons synergize well with the number two.

Oh. Right, sorry. I was thinking about if that would even be legal. I realised it would, but it wouldn't matter anyway, since infantry models can't shoot more than one ranged weapon at a time unless specifically allowed to. In short: two liquifiers is 10 wasted points.
