Never played Traveller myself, but seeing how the original came out back in 1977 I'm guessing there might be a few fans of Traveller here interested in this.
Sorry for the thread Necron but it is in a good cause.
I loved the original Traveller back in the day, and I still have all my first edition books including the Paranoia Press material. I think I lost Striker, though.
Anyway, I managed to miss this Kickstarter. Does anyone know what is going on with it.
I would love to get a copy for nostalgia's sake and it might even lead to a game.

A buddy of mine started a d20 version of Traveler and I bought a relatively cheap used book on ebay. Even though I have been told the original is better, I can live with the d20 version.
Agreed. From the sounds of it there will be. Marc raised enough to be able to. Like I posed earlier, keep an eye on Far Future. THat is the clearing house for all things Traveller related. When I get my Kickstarter copy I'll post a review here. If I see anything about general public releases I'll post here.

Basically the $100 pledge level is available to purchase. Supposedly they started shipping the Kickstarter items yesterday. These will ship after all those have shipped. Or so I hear. Once I get my copy (this is th elevel I pledged) Ill post a review.

I remember the first time they did a large format book. It was mostly the stuff in the smaller books but using a very large font. I really hope this edition is better than that.
I have a friend on YT who likes Traveller generally and he doesn't seem to like Traveller 5 much ... He says Traveller 5 is for people who played classic Traveller from the 70s until today without playing the other newer versions -- not because they will like Traveller 5 but rather that they will not know how bad it's gotten since Traveller and that Traveller 5 is "at the end of that wrong path." His favorite versions of Traveller are the Mongoose and GURPS ones. In talking to him personally, he's mentioned some extremely unwieldy dice mechanics.
Mongoose Traveller is the only one I own and have read, mostly because they did a Judge Dredd game. I've never been into the Traveller setting.
The "core mechanic" is roll 2d6, account for modifiers, try for 8 or better. I think that Classic Traveller is the same regarding combat but this resolution system is used for just about everything in Mongoose's version, which I understand is not true of Classic. I guess there was no concept of "core mechanic" in 1977.

I've got nearly all of Classic Traveller in the original UK edition (by GW, ironically, it was one of the popular licences that propelled them to high street dominance.) The core mechanic in that was roll 2D6, add skill level and get above something.
From what I can see most of the Mongoose edition is similar -- same characteristics, same supplements -- so I am going to take a risk on the core rulebook and adapt my Classic supplements as required.
The Third Imperium background is quite old-fashioned. No cyberspace, etc. It worked really around 1980 when computers were huge mechanisms locked up in labs. I quite like that idea, actually. I've played plenty of other SF games over the years and would like to get back to something old school.
I disfavor cyberspace and like big impressive computers. Star Trek TOS is my favorite generic scifi franchise. Put another way, I really dig the Death Star sets from A New Hope. Traveller seems to apply the tone of hard scifi to the far future setting. IME, that tone works better with near future settings like Aliens. The Third Imperium has a grand sweep supported by lots of detailed information but, at least as far as I've seen, very little romance.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also -- that said, I do really like the character creation system and I like that there is no character leveling thereafter. I also would probably like the early adventure modules. I don't think FFE offers the reprints any more. Legend of the Sky Raiders sounds really impressive:
I got it because it more or less is the Classic rules cleaned up and laid out nicely. Also my classic rules are falling apart, being over 30 years old (Games Workshop edition).
