I play Hordes (trollbloods) and am considering a dwarf mercenary list, but I don't understand all the terms.

Seaforge is basically Rhulic plus some extras (like Cragback and Lug) right?

I can only get the Seaforge benefit if I don't also benefit from a Tier?

The new Ossrum warcaster is making me seriously consider starting up a Seaforge/Rhulic force, although it seems he can only take Rhulic models.

Any tips on sorting out all these terms would be greatly appreciated! Probably going to order the pile of Warmachine rulebooks very soon, although I'll look at a friend's this week to help me sort out what all this means and where the Seaforge/Rhulic/Tier lines/distinctions are!

When doing a Merc or Minion force, you have to pick wither a contract (Searforge Commission, Four Star Syndicate, etc) or a theme list. You get one or t'other, not both.

Example, I play Mercs with Shae. I use his tier list, unless I want to use some solo or other that isn't on it in which case I would default back to the Talion Charter contract.

I also have a Minion Gatormen army. I get gator stuff, not pigs. I also use Blindwater Congregation compact as opposed to a tier list because I kinda hate their tier lists.

Rhulic gets Rhulic, yup. You could go for Four Star or Highborn contracts with a Rhulic caster, as they will work for the respective factions, but you'd still have to use Rhulic jacks with him. If you wanted access to those units or some such.

Hope it helped a little. Rhulic looks interesting, and is one I'm thinking of for a future army myself.

I shall express myself to the fullest, regardless of state or local laws. -me-

If only they hadn't nerfed Hammerfall Highshield Gun Corps, I'd really still be running my Searforge list. I really wish I knew what they thought was so overpowered about that unit... :sigh: Still, they're pretty, and worth painting up.

Good news. This is the best time in the hobby. Full of promise. GW lets us down each time and we know it but secretly we're hoping that this is the edition that GW gives us a balanced game that can also be played competitively at tournaments. I'm loving it.

It's SeaRforge.

Seaforge is the affectionate nickname for the new Shae theme featuring Rhulic units.

Ah, Searforge. Thanks . That sounds a lot better, actually...

Appreciate the quick responses! What was nerfed about Hammerfall Highshield Gun Corps... are you talking about from MKI to MKII, or an errata?

I actually didn't even know for Hordes that people had to choose Blindwater or Pigs "contract"... makes more sense why I only ever see one type or the other in a list now!

So, there's a theme of another Merc warcaster that features Rhulic units, but if I want to go "Rhulic" then I'm going "Searforge". Think I got it there

It was MKI to MKII. They used to have a ranged attack where if they were in Shield Wall, they gained +1 to hit (and also Ranking Fire, so they could shoot past their own models). Combined with forfeiting movement, they got a +3 to hit, bringing their RAT of 4 or 5 to something almost passable for their hideously short ranged guns. They also got an attack that increased damage for ranged, with the downside of needing to spend a turn to reload. Their poor melee abilites were ameliorated by the fact that they had an armor 19 in shield wall, and could take an Ogrun Bokur for the Sergeant, letting him counter charge whatever hit them and clean house. Take them with Gorten and they were immune to blasts (with ARM19 they were anyway for all intents and purposes) and got a +4 def from the rock wall giving them DEF 15 and ARM 19, which is really not bad at all.

Granted, now they have CRA and kept Ranked Attack, but still. They have to CRA quite a few models to be able to actually hit anything, and you have fewer chances to hit with high strength attacks than you did before.

EDIT: Okay, everything I have said above is very true, but I've just discovered General Ossrum. He turns Highshields into highly useful units, and buffs every aspect of the Searforge list I ran in MK1 with the exception of Bokurs (directly, at least. They can still apparently move THROUGH the units they might stand behind for added protection)

Makes sense... looks like they'll be better when taken with the new warcaster "General Awesome", right?

I dunno much about searforge, but one thing that does catch my eye about the rhulics is the grundback gunner, they are just so small and ...lol...cute. I don't know if they would be valuable on the field of battle, but i know eventually i am going to buy 2-3 of them and thor steinhammer just so i can ping people with a bunch of shooty midgets.

Just look at them next to a full size jack! http://www.dakkadakka.com/s/i/at/2008/7/jah-josha-gorten-battlegroup-06064711.jpg

For three points you can't really go wrong with them. Focus efficient as well. One focus will boost both attack and damage rolls, I've killed plenty of casters that way. The blaster version is also good as one focus boosts everything under the spray, but shorter range and less pow means it should be hunting infantry.

I don't know. I'd still be tempted to snipe Assault Corps instead, but I
guess the two units serve completely different purpose. I can see the
argument for using Highshields as an anchored firebase.

Yeah, I'm really excited about that warcaster! Pretty much what tipped me over the edge to start Rhulic.

malfred, I don't suppose you'd have any idea when he'll release?
