It'll soon make sense, don't worry. Pre-Istvaan atm IIRC.

3 or 4 ?
The eisenstein left to warn of the treachery at istvaan, right? So my vote goes to pre - 4.

I don't know exactly, pretty sure it's both.
The opening part with the random in-a-bottle aliens is a pre-cursor to Istvaan; introduces the characters etc.

The start of FotE is pre-both Istvaans I believe there is no battle at Istvaan 4 btw just 3 and 5. 3 is where Horus betrays the loyalist marines within his own legions and 5 is where he traps the Salamanders, Raven Guard and Iron Hands. The events of Istvaan 3 are partially chronicled in this book but Istvaan 5 comes just after.

We are winged salvation, but we are a terrible, final salvation, and our wings embrace the horizon with fire. We are the Blood Angels. To confront us is to die, and death is my remit, my reality, my unbounded domain. I have known death, and defeated it, claimed it as my own. To my cost, to my strength, death is my one gift to bestow, and I am nothing if not generous. |

Yeah, you better get used to that if you're looking to read the rest of the HH novels, the series jumps around the timeline, even if you read them in order of first published. I'm already on "Legion" and the timeline doesn't stay constant, trust me.
The upside to this is you therefore don't HAVE to read them in order. I read Descent of Angels, and skipped to it's direct sequal, Fallen Angels, even though there were several books (Legion, Battle for the Abyss, etc) published in between. I'll proly do the same with Thousand Sons and Prospero Burns, when I get to them.
The wikipedia article, which might have some spoilers (especially if you read the "Character" section) is actually pretty helpful in keeping track of where each novel falls on the timeline, read the "Synopsis: section:

The book starts before any of the Istvaan events have started. As has been stated before, the timeline will jump back and forth from one novel to the next.
