I was just wondering how everyone on Dakka transported their armies, because all the time I see threads filled with vehicles, units etc that seem like they would be a, "female canine", to transport, e.g. Necron vehicles, ork vehicles, and to a lesser extent guard, tau and SM vehicles.

I use the Sabol Armytransport bags for my Guard and Tau armies. I've found them to be great bits of kit. YOu just need to think about what you have/will have and work out which mix of trays works the best.

SM are in a fishing tackle box with cantilever trays (6). Dreads and bikes go in the base (and T-fire cannons). Infantry go in the trays.

Vehicles go into a mailing box with 2" foam vehicle trays (spares for my Battlehive case) - I can fit 4 rhinos per tray. I don't often use more than 4 vehicles a game (my Preds don't have sponsons).

My GK entirely fit into the battlehive case. 2 landraiders (3" tray), Rhinos (x4) 2" tray, terminators 2" tray, and 4 1" trays for the GK.

My eldar figures are in 2 GW cases. My guardians are ALL in the old clamshell (original case) along with other units I rarely use like swooping hawks and wraithguard (I have 5 of them - they die too quickly so they don't get used). The vehicles are packed into a GW outer shipper (the packing/delivery carton that will fit a baneblade box) lined with foam - 2 falcons, 2 fire prisms, 2 night spinners and 4 wave serpents. The walkers (all 9) and wraithlords (4) are packed into their own box.

My guard are piled up in a box, forgotten and unmourned. I lost interest in 40k halfway through building them. I'll finish them for Tomorrow's War instead. I have a tackle box for them.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

I use Kaiser Rushforth cases.

They have a range of bespoke trays that are designed to transport the various GW models as well.

They are cheaper than a GW plastic case (if you go for the cardboard option) and they can carry a few more troops as well.

Another day older; another day closer to death ...

I have a GW case for infantry. It's not worth what they charge, but it works and I got it on sale, so I still use it. I also have a large case, designed for cameras. I came with pluck foam, which I picked to carry all my cavalry models around. As that does not help my tanks at all, I just hand pack them into the case with all the foam scraps I saved from blister/plucking over the years. It works but is not convenient. I also have some boxes and eggshell foam used to ship replacement hard drives I use as overflow transport.

I've been looking at the KR stuff. I looks very nice, but what I have works, so I can't really justify spending my limited entertainment budget on getting new boxes. Maybe around my birthday and Christmas I'll leave a webbrowser open to their page where The Wife can see it and see if she takes the hint...

Currently have a small GW case that holds my infantry for guard. I think I am going to replace it with KR foam so I can bump up the number of models I can carry around to both my guard armies.

Tanks are all in a baneblade box (well my codex tanks at least). They fit fine once I ripped off the sponsons on my battle tanks.

When I carry things around to work on and paint (between home and school and the store) I use card boxes. Just the little like 500 count boxes. They fit a squad perfectly.

I use Maplin pick-foam aluminium flight cases (but only when they are on sale offer at 15 quid each - which is frequently). http://www.maplin.co.uk/flight-case-with-foam-36796
If you pull the eggbox foam liner out of the lid you can get a normal infantry foam tray and foam sheet cover on top of the pick-foam base and still close the lid.

I've had lots of different cases (started with this hobby more than 20 years ago).

KR
I really like KR, their cardboard boxes gives you a very flexible system, and its rather cheap. Their aluminum cases are really nice as well.

GW
Pretty good, but you can´t get in all that many models per volume (low model to volume ratio (I'm a mad scientist I am, for real actually)).

Feldherr
My new favorite. Soft case. You can get in 5 "GW"-foam sheets, but it's smaller than a small GW case.

In my GK case I have
3 chimeras
3 razorbacks
5 dreadnoughts
64 infantry
I could get in a little more, by switching one layer to 40 mm (about 1,5") instead of 25 mm (1").

In my deff wing case I’ve managed to squeeze in
19 Terminators (some with banners and stuff)
10 Tacticals
1 Sammael Speeder
6 bikes
1 attack bike
2 Dreads
2 Dread Drop Pods (slightly larger than GW’s)
1 Razorback
The drop pods really take too much space, almost half the case.

For my Warmachine figures, I sprung for a Battlefoam Bag and am really impressed - the bag is very sturdy and can store a ton of figures.

I think that it's easier to get things out of battle feam cases, as they open on two sides. Kr is cheaper (when I last checked, which was a while ago, including postage and such)

I have about 2250 Points of Orks. They go in a Battlefoam ?720? cases. I had to man up and pick one up. It really made a huge different. I have 2 trays for lootas / burnas, and the Battlewagon tray. Plus some regular ones. It works great. Total cost for cast and foam: a painful $200 easy.

My skaven 2500 pts, are in a Sabol Motor pool. They are all magnetized on quick to deploy trays in blocks of 25 models. There are 4 units of clanrats, 4 units of slaves. 2 doomwheels. 20 jezzails. 20 Censer bearers. 3-4 weapon weapons. Abom, and more in the case as I really planned it well... after several failed attempts. Total cost of case: probably $50 for the bag, i've been through a few trays.... best guess including magnetized basing for army / trays... $300 at least.

Warmachine 50 pts searforge. 50 pts khador. I use the GW Tool Case. Its the size of a small GW case, and has 3 big cut outs in the bottom which fits a total of 6 heavy warjacks. The infantry slots fit small gun bunnies, and infantry. Medium base infantry take up 2, where I cut out the middle piece. Total cost of case: free, won the empty case at a tourney.

The only "customized" case i used was a guard army where I used a gun case that was 12x25 and 8 inches deep. I went to a craft store and bought large foam and cut my tank holes myself. I magnetized all my sponsors so they removed. I fit a 2250 list in that case. Total cost of case: $30.

My orks are in a carboard box. The 30 ork boy mobs are in plastic containers.

My IG, all tanks are in a plastic case that was designed for Christmas ornaments, however, it works better as an army transport. All the troops are in battle foam trays. No bag for them, so, they sit loose.

I did get a transport bag for my Malifaux and Dystopian Wars. Those both go into pluck foam that goes into the transport bag.

Depends on the Army. I use a Battlefoam 720 for my Space Marines. It holds 2 LandRaiders, 1 drop pod, 3 speeders, 3 Rhino/Razorback/Predator tanks (all the weapon options are in a Rhino sized cut-out), 2 Riflemen dreds, a standard dred, 3 tac Squads of 10 (each with a melta, flamer, plasmagun dude to swap as required), 2 scout squads (a 5 man close combat unit and a 5 man sniper unit), a 10 man SternGuard unit, various heavy weapon guys (3 missiles, 3 lasguns, 4 plasma cannons) to fill in the tac squads, several dozen terminators (for when I want to play Deathwing BAs), and several HQs (Belial, Vulkan, Terminator Libby, regular Libby, and Lysander). It also has 5 objectives (3 on 40mm base, 2 on 25mm) and all the templates, dice, and books go in the outside pockets.
For my Guard and Sisters I use a small box (about 4x7) with bublewrap for each tank and some Sabol foam packs to hold all of the boys/girls. These I put in a old box that held a case of copy paper or in a plastic storage tub.
For my orks I just pile mobs of 29 in the 4x7 boxes, PK nobs, in another Box (along with the WB), and trukks/battlewagons sitting free in a bigger box.

cool thing about KR multi cases is so you invest a fairly cheap amount compared to other company's for the bag and your first sets of foam but then when you want to take your other army all you need is to order the custom foam for that army and thats cheap super nice i love it also the hard cardboard walls are nice for if it gets banged and the bags have a semi hard outside as well really durable

For my Space Wolves, I use a Battlefoam 720 case. It wasn't cheap, but worth every penny as before I used to use a GW figure case and about 2 tool boxes to hold all my models.

For my Dwarfs, I got the Battlefoam 420 bag. Again, before I was using a GW case, but the army quickly out-grew that and the 420 bag works perfect for them.

My 13th company Space Wolves are still in a GW figure case and they will most likely stay in there since that army has no vehicles and consists of infantry models only.

My Bretonnians sit in one of those clear plastic tubs that is about 3 feet long and 6" deep. Honestly, I don't know what type of a case I would get to hold them that I would be happy with.

GW cases are so overpriced. I have a shoe box that is crammed with foam inserts to keep the tanks safe, and a box with compartments made from a kit box that I store my marine squads in for easy sorting before and after games.

But check out ummm hardware stores for things, a mate of mine found a case as big as the GW case, stores 8 tanks plus another small amount of models in the spare sections for only 40 bucks (gw case goes for $160 here) so a huge saving.

KR Multicase, I've got the cardboard case. Pretty cheap and effective. Though I don't think that it would stand up to rain very well. The custom foam is working and holding up so much better than the Reaper case that I had before. It gets a bit beat up as it is only cardboard, but it does the job and is pretty cheap to replace.

I have a GW case for troops (the large one - stores two stacks of foam, side by side), simply because I found it cheap on Ebay, with all foam included and in reasonable condition - never would've paid full price for it.

For vehicles, I lucked out and found a trio of cases for power tools left empty on the curb by my old place. A bit of time with the rotary tool (and flex-shaft/cutoff wheel) to remove the internal supports and dividers and they're ready for foam, which I simply haven't gotten around to since I don't need to transport armies, much. For the move, everything just got wrapped up in crumpled newspaper. Perfectly effective, but time-consuming enough to be too inconvenient a solution for frequent transport.

If I start playing at the LGS, I'll pick up some seat cushion foam (1" thick sheets, will be stacked as needed) from Michaels and cut my own trays, whether that means vehicle trays for the big case or troop and vehicle trays for the smaller cases.
