I am planing on making a Mordheim Board here soon, and I am going to use 12"x12" sq tiles. I am looking for ideas that could allow me to lay down large patches of cobblestone be it sculpted or press molded.. Its much to large of a area to do a silicone case (at least its to large for my wallet). I have thought about doing a skin mold, but I feel it would wear out before I had a chance to cast all the pieces. The buildings will be based off of four of the tiles, and will repeat with varying differences to make them unique. Feed me ideas I could use to get this done.

Look at ceiling tiles, some will have the right texture, or go to a model train store and they will prob have cobblestone stuff for making train layouts.

I've seen textured wall paper used as cobbles.
A more expensive solution would be textured plasticard.

I found a local shop that will sell me a 25lb block of wet clay. I think I am going to use that as my master and sculpt the texture and use the liquid rubber to make a gypsum cast for it.. I think this is my best bet for keeping the cost down as well as giving me the best possible cast..

Cobblestones as roads?
I've seen some articles where people use pink foam, and carve indents in it to the design of cobblestones. It's cheap, and can cover large areas. I'm sure it takes time to carve all of those little stones, but it ends up looking nice if you take your time.
Here's a link off a quick google search. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c215/goot_chute/Terrain%204/IMG_0118.jpg
If you are doing 1'x1' squares, it will be easy once you draw out where the roads will be.

Something like this http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/pls/pls91559.htm or http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/pls/pls91581.htm might work too. They have a couple different scales IIRC and some other patterns that might help break things up as needed.

for really big areas you could maybe get a paint roller and texture the roller bit. Then you could easily impress into any soft material.

Hirst arts are good but time consuming although Bruce will make bigger molds on demand if you ask.
I would suggest a trip to your nearest model train shop or website. They will have loads of premade plastic, card and foam sheets (upto A4 I would suggest) of all sorts of textures.
Here found this on eBay too, there was loads; just search on cobblestone:

This is def the most cheapest method.. I thought about doing this first, but it would take forever to cut and texture on a 4'x4' board which I may later expand to a 6x4 or a 8x4 lol.. Cool thing is I am getting all the wood to build the table for free, just have to figure out what size I am going to do.. This is why I was thinking the mold route.. Hydro-stone is rather cheap its $22 for 50lbs worth of material, it would last a long time..Even if I got molds for the buildings.. Plus I could mix up more tiles when I need it and they would be ready in a about hour.. The plastic card is just to expensive on a large scale like this, its perfect for display boards and bases, but not this..

My good man, I've done something I rarely permit myself to do... I signed up for a random forum I got on a google search to give a reply to this question, only bcz I have a cheap method for cobblestone that I didn't notice set out here that I've been so far happy with..
I am doing something similar that needed cobblestone roads, and I went to my hobby store for advice, and their suggestion shocked me; go to a hardware store and get some kind of drywall plaster powder that you need to mix with water, that shouldn't cost more than at most 5 or 10 bucks, then go to the bulk section in the grocery store and buy a bag of dried split peas. Follow me? Apply one, apply the other, badaboombadabing there ya go
I used a couple of different methods to get them down:
1) I glued them down and wiped the drywall plaster (as a powder) over the peas to that they are about 2/3 covered, then I hit it with a spray bottle and let it set. This felt like the faster of the two options but the plaster cracked in a way that didn't look quite right as it dried.
2) The Other method was to lay down a thin-ish layer of the plaster (mixed with water this time to make a paste) where I wanted my road and set the peas one at a time, letting it squish up in between. The second method took a little longer but I liked the results more. I recommend doing this option in small batches of plaster, never mix more than you can use before it sets bcz adding water doesn't stop it from setting once it's started
Any cobblestone is a labour intensive project, and to speed this method up, I've thought about laying out a bunch of split peas, all flat side up, and grabbing a strip of them on some packing tape, flipping it over then applying the plaster. Not sure if that would work or if it's more trouble than it's worth, let me know if you do
Hope this gives you some inspiration!

I use vinyl cobblestone mats put out by Christmas Village manufacturers (Search Dept 56 or Lemax).
Here's a link to a similar road on Ebay:

I just drybrushed mine a bit more to dust them up ... quick, easy and durable.

I've been watching a lot of Cake Boss recently (my wife loves this show and tbh, I'm diggin what they do with the fondant) and reading through the posts here made me think about the baking rollers they use to add texture to fondant.
Did a little google search and found this article:
http://www.tabletop-terrain.com/archives/2010/10/17/1064/dustans-cobblestone-texture-roller/
Basically taking a paint roller and making your own mold for the roller part gives you a way to roll out the clay thin and then just go over it with the roller to create the texture you want. Also, if you have a sturdy roller, this could be used on the pink foam to create the desired effect if you push hard and go over it a few times.
Or, if you don't want to make your own, these exist:
http://www.icingonlinestore.com/product_info.php?products_id=1256
I bet you could find them in larger widths.
I found this site to have Brick, wood and paving stone textured rollers as well:

I have to say this is the most inventive idea for cobblestone texture. I have a lot of choices to choose from for doing the texture. I happen to see a great tutorial on brickwork and such from a dakka user AlfonsoTheTraitor. He has a wonderful way of creating endless designs with the minimum use of materials. His youtube channel is really good as well http://www.youtube.com/user/AlfonsoTheTraitor?feature=watch. I will probably be using a mix of his technique and some others to make the board tiles come to life. Keep looking back for updates on it. Baiken,
I appreciate you signing up to the site just to answer my question. The split peas sounds interesting to say the least. It would be awesome if you could post a example for me to see what it would look like.
