Been wondering if its worth the points to put lootas in Battlewagons, or save the battle wagons for more nobz. Thoughts?

Lootas should never be in battlewagon. Wagon is made for transporting orks, not being a bunker for lootas. Lootas should just sit back in your deployment shooting.

I figured using a battlewagon as a protective bubble would keep lootas alive longer or could get them in range faster.

the problem with putting lootas in a transport is that it only takes one Crew Shaken result and suddenly the whole mob can't shoot for a turn. Also, they can't fire their weapons if the thing moves at all.
But Deffguns are 48" range anyway, there's not much reason to move them from your deployment zone, unless there's simply way too much terrain on the table

The problem is if the vehicle gets shaken or stunned the lootas cannot fire that turn. Also if lootas are not in range of something you probably all ready won, or deployed them in a very poor place.
|
The thing thing about any discussion concerning why orks did something usually ends with because they are orks, and noone seems to argue, or offer further questioning.

what he said, preferable in area terrain for a cover save.

As has been stated they should already be in range...48 in is huge.
They are more survivable and effective in cover than in the wagon...when that thing explodes you are losing a couple, who are then easily pinned for a turn...this isnt counting the whole shaken and stunned thing that was mentioned earlier as well.

Good points. What about in apocalypse? My group insists on playing the opposite way than normal so 48' is really rather short range in comparison.

In Apocalypse try this one formation. 3+ trukks, each with a mek/big mek and each with 4+ lootas. They can shoot and move as long as they are in the trukk, but any rolls of 1 on the D3, one loota dies.

In an army operating under the idea of "boyz before toyz", are you really going to pay 90p+ for a BUNKER, an open topped, AV12 side armored bunker for your lootaz? it cant move and shoot you know?
It sounds like a good idea, but after a single game you will seriously go "oh. right. this is why i don't do that."

Then I should get a couple more Deff Rollas then lol. How about Kannons and Killkannons?

Kannons are useful for the str 4 frag shot (defensive weapons for the win!).
The Killkannon is expensive cant instakill t4 models, has good AP, but is ordinance so if you shoot it (at BS2) its the only thing your wagon is shooting...and youre not going krusing speed...
Its your call...Ive used the killkannon a couple of times and it never impressed me...kannons on the other had are quite good if you are willing to put a few more points into your wagon!

In regards to the Killkannon, I'd much rather use the forgeworld Supa-kanon.
For 10pts more than the killkanon you get a weapon with 60" range, str9, ap3, Ordnance, and Large Blast.
Your transport capacity is lowered to only 6, however.
Kannons, on the other hand, are pretty nifty - and a much safer choice. A str8 ap3 shot for only 10pts is great, not to mention the defensive bonuses of using the str4 variant. If you're looking to take 2 weapons to negate Weapon Destroyed results, I'd recomend a Big Shoota and a Kannon.

I had two lists where they stayed back in kitted out Wagons.
Two somethins were infront of the wagons and a big mek behind with a KFF and some lobbas. It was a strange list, it did really well. I wouldn't suggest it for a tournament though.
What was it...
BM-KFF
WARBOSS-BIKE-BC-AS-CYBORK
NOB BIKERs Painboy ETC...
Two BW'S, 4 BIGSHOOTAS, 1 KANNON.
2x 15 lootas
ONE 3 xLobbas
2x 20 BOYZ w/NOB/PK/BP
2x Deffkoptas TL rokkits/ Buzzsaws
maybe a deff dred...skorcha and big shoota...maybe not...
It was a weird list, won two games with it, one solo and one on a team. Stopped running it because it just didn't seem good enough that it would keep winning once my opponent understood why it worked.
I suppose in short, no, lootas in BW's aren't a better choice than throwing Deffrollas on your BW's and leaving your lootas back somewhere.
Other thing...umm...kannons over killkannons in my opinion.

“I may ‘ne be a good shot Timer, but I don’t miss much from this close up with my hammer,” Forling continues to fire.
“All the enemies are good and far away so what the hell does that…” Timer looks up to see Forling giving him an angry stare. “Oh, yea, ok, um, good shooting.”

Thanks for the insight everyone, I've been holding back on finishing the turrets on a couple of my battlewagons cuz I wasn't sure if I wanted to run killkannons or kannons.

A really simple thing i like to do is put zapp guns on my battle wagon. Its always lol and for 10 pts its not the worst thing in the world. I forgot how the rule book ruled random strength weapons but my group would let me rule it as defensive because it could be strength 4 or less and it was only 1 shot at grot bs. I was incredibly lucky using it on a regular bases and annhilated 2-3 land raiders with it 1 game rolling box cars for strength every time

The zapp gun is amusing, but I'd like something a little more reliable. If I were to use it, it would be a count as kannon.
