What does that mean?

So everyone is clear: A drug is a chemical substance capable of altering the state of an organism that is not normally vital to it's survival, ie. Water, air, vitamins, and minerals all alter your state of being, but are not considered drugs, everything else is.

Amasec is, like most Imperial names in 40k, a catch-all term. It ranges from the vilest, nastiest dregs brewed in the slums of Hives to the finest wines a Lord Inquisitor might drink with his evening meal - and everything inbetween.

Same more or less with Lho-sticks - a Lho-stick is a tube filled with a shredded leaf which, when smoked, acts as a narcotic, similar to tobacco based products we have such as cigarettes & cigars. Different leaves from different planets may have different tastes, effects & side-effects.

Most of the described substances in 40k, at least Imperial ones, revolve around combat drugs such as 'Slaught & Barrage. These sorts of stimuli are not the kind of thing that would be abused for recreation due to the horrificly painful physical and mental side effects. Hallucinogen grenades might be used recreationally, due to the effects (has lead to some interesting situations when used in games of Inquisitor), but on the whole most of the drugs are there to boost the user in some way - physically &/or mentally.

Medical stim shots seem to be a staple for Imperial Veterans who want to get the war high all the time.

I think Gaunt was more angry with the crew who he had advised to lock up the stores of paint and such, rather than his own men who he had expected this behavior from. LOL

Recaf was mentioned in the novels, almost certainly in 15 hours and I think in Emperor's Mercy and/or Flesh and Iron. It seemed to be analogous to coffee.

Here's an old thread that dug up some more examples (from Dark Heresy, it seems?)

Ravenor books mention "flects" which are chaos-tainted shards of glass from previously consumed worlds that have re-emerged into normal space (ALL the window glass on the planet, energised with the energies of chaos and mass death). The 'mergent worlds' - usually still under Imperial interdiction and considered forbidden territory.

Users look into the facets and see something, which ranges from a hallucinogenic high, to a depressive low (and it's random), but each "look" just makes them want more.

Also Stims (uppers) applied to the skin of the wrist generally (or inside upper arm - skin is thinner (relatively) there and the drugs can enter the bloodstream quicker).

Amasec is a booze that can be rotgut or can be the equivalent of good Cognac or Armagnac.

Lho is basically tobacco/weed. Possably a genetic cross between the 2 plants that has spread throughout the galaxy. It's legal whatever it is.

Grinweed could be Cocaine or an evolution of it.

Penshel Seeds are almost certaintly Opium.

Yeah, Amasec is the good stuff. Rotgut is completely different.

Rather like the difference between "brandy" and Cognac? Apart from the regional difference (only brandies from the Cognac region and made a certain way can be called Cognac)

Not all Cognacs are equal (some are more equal than others) - Hennessy is better than Courvoisier but I've had some rather rough brandies in my time also.

I consider most American Whiskeys (and especially bourbon styled whiskeys) as rotgut, for example - others consider them manna from heaven.

In the first Eisenhorn audio story, Master Imus's Transgression, Eisenhorn and Titus Endor discover illegal drugs in Imus's house. But I can't remember what they're called, all I know is that they're illegal due to their use in witchcraft or something like that.

The Kasrkin were just men. It made their actions all the more astonishing. Six white blurs, they fell upon the cultists, lasguns barking at close range. They wasted no shots. One shot, one kill. - Eisenhorn: Malleus

Rotgut refers more to distilled spirits with a high alcoholic content - hence 'Rotgut'. Amasec can be absolutely dreadful stuff and does range vastly in quality depending on what it's made from, where it's made and how long the locals are blind for after drinking it or whether they pour it on their food as a condiment
