Thunderhawk Pilot Dropping From Orbit

Played an intro game with my buddy last night and we had a blast. It was also the first time I've ever ran into close combat. Usually models are mowed down with automatic fire before this happens, lol.

What happened is he used all of his orders to sneak up behind the site arc of one of my lowly ghulams with a Combined Army model that had martial arts level 4, so in this case my guy was not able to react, as his character was a frigging ninja and promptly decapitated my poor soldier.

We had questions as to how many attacks a character gets in close combat, and we couldn't find anything about this in the manual. Is it just one attack?

Also, if you are attacked from behind, do you get an ARO? In this case, the rules specifically say if someone has martial arts level 4 you don't. Buy say its just low-cost troops without such skills, does someone get to turn around and attack back? Or is the facing change the ARO and that model would get no attack in that round?

Thanks.

yes one attack only.

Here is how i understand it.

without MA4....Yes normally once an enemy fig enters the ZOC the reacting fig may make a free tun to face that fig (this way he is already facing the sneaking up fig)...and he may even attempt to shoot that enemy fig as an ARO as the enemy attempts to attack at CC.

The fig attacked from behind by a MA4 troop still gets an ARO ...which could be dodge (or change facing if he is hit and survives the attack). He is still allowed an ARO since the attacking fig is in his ZOC even though he did not turn to face it.

MA4 fig....moves from behind into ZOC

Trooper fig....cannot turn to face the MA4 fig

MA4 fig gets B2B with the Trooper (first short movement order)

Trooper fig may now declare ARO Dodge

MA4 fig can now make his 2nd half of the order which will most likely be attack.

If the Trooper fails the dodge but survives the CC he may change facing.

Martial Arts 4 also includes levels 1-3, so he'd strike before the ARO (the wiki says they make a normal roll). Even with a successful dodge that would win a face to face roll, the dodging model will have to take an armour save... nasty!

I realize now that I might have misunderstood change facing and whatnot. Does it work this way in Shooting too? If someone walks into your ZoC and shoots you in the back, do you get to dodge, and then (if you survived) turn facing?

Yes...as dodging in ARO allows you to move half your first MOV value...so when you dodge / move you can change his facing.

NO!

You cannot Dodge when you get shot in the back because Dodge requires Line of Fire.

Right.. if they are outside your zone of control and you are shot in the back, if you survive that shot I believe the only thing you can do is change facing to turn to look at them. So, obviously it is not something to be recommended

I've yet to have a round of CC - I did want to fight a round against a friend's force (that was retreating - so it was a token effort!) but he did the 'Indiana Jones' thing of calmly pulling out his gun and shooting my charging Snake Pliskin-look-a-like Ghulam dead as he charged in with his knife
