Want to try and make a small press mould for making a few GS copes of parts.
Now, for simple flay objects im fine, but what about something with bulk to it?
The parts i want to mould are chest pieces ive made for a SM chaper of mine so i can use them for every marine.
Now, the origional idea i had was to simply press the part into a piece of GS about half way in depth, then apply a 2nd piece of GS to the top of it to make it a 2 part mould.
However, what sort of agent could i use to prevent the GS sticking to the part and the other GS please?
And does this idea seem like it would work?
Just want a quick and easy way to replicate the chest design without having to go mad making a huge mould or using resins.

Look up a product called Instant Mold. It was released some time ago and is marketed toward miniature uses.
use this link for a basic description on google. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&pq=molding+plastic&cp=11&gs_id=3u4&xhr=t&q=instant+mold&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1440&bih=768&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=7662754300019742958&sa=X&ei=VPTTT87CBaa46QHhxti5Aw&sqi=2&ved=0CI4BEPMCMAE
i think links are allowed here, my apologies ahead of time to the mods if they are not. Simply trying to be helpful.
if you have any questions pm me, i've used this stuff a few times to make Space wolves weapons and torsos.

instant mold is an awesome product and I would highly recomend it for what your doing but if you cany get hold of it then make one side of the mold first, wait for itto dry and then make the other. also vaseline makes for good mold release though you shouldnt really need it

Ill see if i can find any instant mold, its peaked my interest
So just using vaseline like i do with my sculpting tools should be enough to keep the parts sticking to one another?
Sounds good to me.
Also, got a 1KG block of GS to use so i can afford to go by trial and error with it.
Just wondering if water would work in place of vaseline, again, its something ive got used to using on my sculpting tools.

water would work for your tools, lots of dipping. But definatly not a release agent for the instant mold, to be honest, as long as you give the GS a little time to set up in the mold, you likely wont even need a release agent.

On topic: Intant Mold or Blu Stuff, and how do you line up a two part mold? Seems like a nightmare tbh....

Thanks squall
Diabolic - The bottom half of the mould will have a few pins in it, so when i form the top half on it they will pierce through it and allow a perfect match every time.
Thats in theory anyway lol.

No probs, im simply thinking this as i go along lol, my usual planning method.
However, we shall see how it comes out tomorrow.
I dont want to ruin the chest piece ive sculpted on so ill use something small like a necron scarab or a bolter to test it.

Instant Mold is great for making bits. Just be sure that your work area is clean and dust free. You can use Legos to make the mold boxes. Just one thing to consider when making 2 part molds. When making your second half, be sure to cool it quickly by running it under cool water. The reason for this is because of the heat from the second mold can transfer to your already hardened mold and bond both sides together.

The amazing thing about instant mold is that you will NEVER need mold release when using it. You could use superglue as a casting material and you'd still be just fine.
What I did for a 2 part press mold:
-Grab your piece you'd like to reproduce, and note where the mold line would be located. Keeping parts fairly simple would make this project easier.
-Follow directions to soften mold sticks, and form that carefully around your piece, completely covered (no super thin spots!)
-Let cool/harden (run under cold water if you're impatient)
-Grab a NEW, SHARP X-acto knife, and cut the Instant Mold around the mold line, being careful not to cut your piece.
-WOOHOO! Mold hath been created-eth...
Grab some GS, form it into a ball of about the right amount, and smash it in between, being careful to line up your edges and leave no bubbles.

Good luck, let us know how it works for ya

Hey there - my current P&M Blog has quite a lot of press molding of parts - I used Instant Mold as well. On this page are heads, shoulder pads and base textures.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/346076.page
I'd say, as long as you do your chest pieces in two halves, you'll be fine. If you're using Instant Mold, you won't need a release agent.
