Probably so huge we won't recognize the game anymore...
Please, we have two weeks before we see the rules. Let's see the rules first.

There's really no way to know until we see the rulebook.

Some large changes, mostly small tweaks. Wound allocation changed completely, LOS changed (friendly models and skimmers didn't block LOS in 4th, and Area Terrain used size categories to determine LOS), the vehicle rules were tweaked a bit, close combat added charge reaction, which sped up close combats considerably.
The change from 3rd to 4th was similar... a few big things, but mostly just refining the system. 2nd to 3rd, by contrast, was a fairly comprehensive makeover... the system changed considerably, and all of the 2nd edition codexes were rendered obsolete. It's fairly safe to assume that this edition won't be that huge a change, though...

I think the Active Terrain was something that used to be around a long time ago. If I remember correctly there used to be rules for stuff like playing on a Frozen Board and stuff like that. I played in a tourney once where if you were playing on the Ice landscape board you had to roll to see if you could see the opposing player through the blinding snow and when you moved a tank you had to roll difficult terrain tests and if you failed there was a chance that your tank would be lost completely as it had fell through a weak spot in the ice.

He is refering to an old set of rules that made the BF actually do something, like the recent deathworld thing in the WD, i would like to see something like the terrain idea from fantasy.. but it may not translate over to 40k that well

Ah, that sounds fun.
At my local store we did something kinda similar. Recreating some historic battle between Space Wolves and Tau or something. Two boards, one being the top of an ice sheet and the other being the frozen sea below. Land Raiders and Terminators attacking Tau submarines under the water with SM Drop Pod assault on the top. As a special rule if any Drop Pod scattered (and they scattered 3D6 due to landing during a blizzard) off the board it hit a patch of thin ice and crashed through to hit a random section of the underwater board. Two of the ones which scattered off landed on top of SM land raiders, but apparently just bounced off as they did absolutely no damage.
It was fun and the special rules added some extra hilarity.

That sounds fantastic. I hope that an option for something like that finds its way back into the game. It would certainly give people an incentive to make/buy board & terrain variations.

Not necessarily. Anyone want to take bets on how many days before the 23? Some storeowner somewhere is gonna take snapshots using his iphone and loading them up on the internet.
