Subject: Starting Necrons - 1000 Pts. list suggestions

Hi everyone, I am starting a Necron army and am looking for some advice on how to go ahead.
The direction I want to take with with my Necrons is more shooty, I especially like the Tesla rules
Any suggestions are welcome
My basic idea for a 1000 pts list would be along the lines of this:
*************** 1 HQ ***************
Overlord w/ Scythe, mindshacle scarabs, SW, Tachyon arrow+ barge
Court
+ Lord, Staff of light, SW, mindshacle scarabs, regenarator orb -> 95 Pkt.(put into the Immortals unit)
+ Harbinger of Destruction, Flaming gaze, Solar Pulse -> 65 Pkt. (put into Warrior unit)
*************** 1 Elite ***************
Triarch stalker
*************** 2 Standard ***************
7 Necron warriors
+ ghost ark
9 Immortals, Tesla
*************** 1 Heavy support ***************
Annihilation barge, Tesla
total points: 999

Good to see another Necron player. Welcome!
Re your list, it looks pretty solid, couple of points:
a) AT. Even if you have HGC on the Stalker, you are a little light on AT. Perhaps consider dropping the Lord, getting another Lancetek (without pulse). Then, because you can't attach both lanceteks to the warriors, put the lanceteks in the ghost ark together and walk the warriors near it (or behind it for cover).
b) Single stalkers will get targeted pretty quickly, then you'll lose your TL effect. So, suggest you use that Arrow very quickly. Also, the Stalker represents a fair chunk of your points - for the same points you could get another Anni barge and 4 scarab bases.
c) If you really want to keep the Lord, get a war scythe instead of the SoL. The SoL range isn't fantastic - if the opponent is within 12" you are probably going to want more CC capability rather than the SoL shots.

Thanks for the welcome, I desperately needed a change from my Space Wolves (both painting and playwise, you can only paint so many wolf furs before it get's tedious ).
Also I must say I really enjoy how the Necrons play, I got a test game in with a loaned army on Saturday and it was very entertaining^^
Regarding the lord, I think I would keep it since I believe that the Immortals would draw some fire and could really need the resurrection orb. but switching out the Staff for a scythe sounds sensible, I guess I could need any edge in CC I can get
Without the stalker, should I keep the Tachyon arrow? The plan was that I would use it as a back up plan if the stalker didn't manage to take something down I really need gone. For 30 points it seems a bit too expensive without twin-linking it, knowing my luck with dice in such situations . Then I would put in the additional Annihilation barge and 7 Scarabs instead of the Tachyon arrow and stalker.

I have to say that the Arrow has never done anything useful for me (because the dice gods hate me too). I get much better results from a couple of scarab bases! 7 Scarab bases is much better than 4.
Re the lord and CC, yep, that's not something we are excellent at. As you play test more, see how you go with that unit, because that Lord is costing you almost as much as 5 more immortals. At this points level, I'd be seriously considering an additional unit of immortals instead.
Funny, I'm currently looking at Space Wolves to give me something other than Necrons to play - but I'll probably just get Dark Eldar!

That's true, the lord is far from cheap at 1000 pts. And a 5 man Immortal squad can dishout some hurt as I've seen. I guess I'll test a bit and see. Also with 6th around the corner who knows what will be cool suddenly
I can only recommend Space Wolves, they're very fun to play, paint and assemble since the models are great and have a big variety.
I also considered Dark Eldar for some time, they definitely would fit my fondness for shooty armies, but the models are a bit too small for my liking, I tend to be a bit clumsy with painting/assembling sometimes
The Necron warriors are already proving to be a bit annoying to assemble, but I won't need so many of them, so it's bearable.

Overall a decent shooting list.
I would vote against a squad of immortals and go for more warriors. Just take a squad of like 7 warriors and put them in reserve to cap points. The Immortals wont be going very far on their feet.
(If you must keep them drop them down to like 5)
* Saves you money and Points.
You dont need Flaming gaze.
If your Overlord isnt in a squad a Rez Orb isnt that great.
Your Lord dosnt need SW he is fine with a 3+ (just allocate to warriors if you can)
With the points saved i suggest you look to add some redundancy into the list (2 stalkers or 2 barges).
Also note You arent allowed to post points in the forums.

Wait till you try and assemble a ghost ark then! Or a CCB. However, it isn't too bad. As a tip, to save money, you can make your own crypteks, just have a look in Dakka for Battleforce Bash as there was some advice in there. I made my own, you can have a look at pictures on my user page if you want (and they were my first kit bashes!)

For the overlord in the Barge, I'd keep SW - it makes him a bit more survivable for when the barge gets shot out from under him. Also for when you sweep a tank (and blow it up ) then disembark and assault another tank and blow that up too ( ). Helps to keep you alive when the squishy stuff inside falls out. If you want to be really aggressive with the OLord, in higher points games - give him a Shifter for the invul save.

I think this is only if you post points for options. Posting points for total unit or character is ok.

Thanks for the feedback!
I understood the rules so that I could post point totals, but I'll remove them then, better safe than sorry I guess.
You're right about flaming gaze, if such a small squad of warriors gets assaulted it won't matter that much if there is an attack more or less.
Regarding the Immortals/warriors I will think about it, the more standard units the better, but somehow I really like the Immortals at that size, but I'll definitively give this some thought.

Thanks for the heads up, I will take a look there. Very nice crypteks, I especially like the Gauss pistol one
The sweeping attacks are awesome, yes In my testgame my Overlord was just zipping around hitting stuff from atop his glider and just making a general nuisance of himself, very funny^^ Then he got out of the overlordmobile, tried to beat up a tactical squad, failed utterly and ran away, but good times nevertheless

Its ok to post points for unit totals.
Re Gaze, If you had 10 points to spare and had nothing else to spend it on - removing the additional attack is worthwhile.

I have a 2k list that revolves around 13AV and I don't give my lord anything else besides the Warcythe (and Mind Shackle Scarabs if I can fit them in because they can be hilarious to use.) I just rely on Lance teks, Stalkers, and Gauss (Not that reliable I think because I run small squads of Warriors but it's better than nothing) for AT. If you could make it work, I'd say go for 13AV at that level but it would be very expensive. Though I think some lists would have a tough time dealing with all of that imho.
