The Twilight Zone

Hi all,

This came up last night. My opponent said that his turbo penetration rounds get 4D6 for armor penetration against my wave serpent, He said the field protects against bonus dice(being a casual game I did not argue) but reading the codex the energy field says "All ranged attacks never roll more than +1D6 for armor penetration." So it seems that turbo penetration rounds do not work on wave serpents.

What do you guys think?

The most important rule of 40K-Page XVII of the 6th edition rulebook, the figure at the top right of the page. "Shake hands with your opponent and thank them for a good battle and fun experience." Then go out for a beer.

That is correct,

So the best a Turbo-penetrator could do would be to Glance.

I was under the impression that Rending still affected Wave Serpents. I would say, technically, a Rending weapon is only rolling D6 for is armour penetration, it simply gets an additional D3 after that roll is resolved, thus not coming into conflict with the "Energy Fields" rule?

The additional D3 is still added to the armour penetration roll. When it occurs is inconsequential. Its still more than 1D6.

Also, (something I didn't realize before) Ordnance don't get to roll 2 dice and pick the highest.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

But i was clearly wrong, not that it ever came up in a game anyway

Looks like Psyfledread is the only good way to counter Wave Serpent.

Mass psycannons also help, since even at their worst they're essentially BS4 autocannons, just sacrificing 48" range for being Assault weapons. A combat squad of Purifiers pumps out 8 S7 BS4 shots (because who wouldn't take 10 purifiers and 4 psycannons?) per shooting phase if they stood still during movement, and that's a very good all-around Eldar counter, since we have nothing over AV12.

Psyrifles are the best counter, but psycannons can be just as good and equally - if not more - numerous, and aren't exactly pricey either; 5 Purifiers with PCannons are only 5pts more than a psyrifleman, but have the ability to hide in terrain and have 3 ablative wounds.

Rending is actually debateable, given that Tankhunters does work against the energy field.

Q. Does the Wave Serpent’s energy field negate the +1
bonus to the penetration roll from the tank hunters
universal special rule? (p45)
A. As the tank hunters universal special rule does not
alter the strength of the attack, the energy field has no
effect on it.

Same answer could be said to apply to rending......................

Energy Fields specifies that you may never roll more than +1D6; you do not roll for Tank Hunters, therefore it is unnaffected, whereas you do roll for Rending.

Except that Rending is an extra penetration die and Energy Field only allows 1D6 penetration.

The two aren't even close to comparable.
