Subject: The Old Gods Will Rise Again - Necron Kitbashing Ahoy! - Wraith Lord/Destroyer Lord Conversion
This is primarily a fluffy force based around the idea of re-awakening or re-building the C'tan as I'm more partial to the old fluff. There isn't anything wrong with the new fluff, it's just personal preference. One of the great things about the new book is that, from a fluff perspective, both old and new fluff directions can still work together to a degree.
I had originally planned to create the force entirely out of kitbashing the plastic kits, but scrapped that in order to get some of the metal destroyers before they were finely cast. In saying that, I am having a slight issue in dry-fitting the plastic rods in the metal cannons, probably will leave them off as they don't look terribly bad without. Anybody else have/had issues with that?
Looking for some painting suggestions, thinking of a rusted scheme as i'm not the greatest painter in the world. If anybody can think of anything else that could work relatively easily the suggestion is more than welcome.
I particularly like the way the Praetorian torso's look on the destroyer body. I think the collar makes them look almost vampiric, at least somewhat more imposing.
All vehicles in the army will be Pilot-less or the Pilots will be integrated into the machine itself.
An earlier idea was to represent Destroyer's Gauss Cannons as Staffs of Light. That Idea was scrapped as I couldn't think of a good way to represent Heavy Gauss Cannons.
Former Destroyer Lord met with an unfortunate accident and became a regular destroyer.
Immortals
The next big challenge will be in combining the Tomb Spyder/Wraith/Destroyer kits in order to make a new Destroyer Lord acting as the fabricator/technical overseer for the tomb world from which they operate.

The centre of a massive brood chamber, heaving and pulsating.
Looking nice! I would reccomend painting the recesses of the Immortal's gauss blaster teubes, to make it look like it glows.
One thing you could do is replace all the green tubes with the opaque new tubes, to save on bother...

I'll meet you half way on that one. I've just done the dots the same way I do the eye. It gives the impression it is powered, but doesn't take as much time as doing the glowing lines.
Picture has turned out a little blurry, but it gets the point across.
As I've had so much fun with the Green Tubes already I think i'll pass on that conversion option!

Looking much better with the dots! I like the use of the Deathmark heads.
What kind of basing were you thinking of? An original idea could be swampy bases, with the Necrons trudging through the marshes.

This is almost exactly what I was planning, especially the pilotless vehicles.
Very nice!

With the anticipation of IA 12; And my ultimate realisation that I couldn't resist it despite my initial bitching I have begun working on my Necrons again. With the announcement that Flayed ones will be troops in this book, I had been thinking of ways to make unique flayed ones with no skin. Ones that looked like they had just awoken.
Metal Flayed one hands, deathmark head, legs and a warrior torso.
I'm also in the process of building a Nightshroud. No pictures as of yet. Probably won't be until it's at least primed!
While i'm waiting on my bits to arrive I decided to put together a new Immortal. I like the simple headswap of the ones I had done before, but they seem too generic. Immortals were among the first Necrontyr to join the C'tan and accept the Necrondermis. I wanted to reflect that in the same way I had done with the heavy destroyers.
I picture these guys as being Hunters of life and fellow Necrontyr, both in the current timeline and during the War in Heaven. Perhaps as enforcers they purged those Necrontyr that resisted the Necrodermis. I plan on using the capes for all, but switching out the legs with the Lychguard ones.
The first being swiftly followed up by numbers 2 and 3.
I'm also attempting to make some rules for them as unique Necron units, just for fun mind you
Venatarkh warriors are often utilised to decimate the command structures of opposing armies.
They are Destroyers who shunned the use of the grav platforms in favour of the ability to tear out the
heart of the enemy through surprise teleportation strikes. It is not uncommon for Venatarkh squads
to appear within the operation centres of the enemy, enveloped by a dark mist, and annihilate them. These
actions leave the remaining opposing forces scattered and terrified, making easy prey to these brutal, hate
filled soldiers. Darkness will not save you from the predations of the Venatarkh, the shadows are their ally,
fear is their weapon.
Particularly cold & ruthless Venatarkhs gain the position of Lord, and will eliminate the enemies of the Phaeron
without rest. They posses technologies used to inspire fear and dread in the hearts of the enemy that are
normally held solely by Harbingers of Despair. The Venatarkh Lord will lead his cohort across an
entire world, systematically purging their intended targets. The ruination of the foe being the only trace of
their presence.
It has been known for high ranking Imperial Commanders and officials to commit treacherous acts shortly before
disappearing when the Ventarkh Lord stalks the field. It has been theorised that the venatarkh Lord
possess some ability to manipulate the minds of it's enemies in order to further disrupt the ranks of the foe.

I've been pondering the conversion for a while now, and hadn't figured out how to do it until today.
Will be a counts as Destroyer Lord, obviously I'll need to increase the base size, but I was more taking this as a kitbashing exercise. I imagine that the lashwhips are the delivery system for the mindshackle scarabs, and are constantly writhing, shielding the Lord. Fallen enemies being held aloft and quartered with the warsycthe.

Cheers man, really love your 'crons and the lighting work you do. Your Lychguard inspired me to think more about the kits to try and get more out of them like you did with the head-dresses and new swords.
Love that new Tombstalker that you built, have you decided to go for any of the new FW releases? I know you weren't overly keen on them originally. I wasn't either at the start, but I slowly came round to them.
Thanks mate, I spent a bit of time sorting the arm/legs to create a sweeping/writhing feel.
I'm thinking I might make the rest of my Wraiths in this way. Renaming them "Zantragoran Wraithkin", they drag their enemies kicking and screaming back to their Tombworld for experimentation.
Zantragora is the Tomb World that are trying to re-create flesh bodies, or if Szeras entry is to be believed, attain a state of being similar to the C'tan.

Very nice work here mate. I love the look of the necrons, their parts just go together nicely for kitbashing, unlike the different esthetics on other armies. It still takes skill and a good concept to pull it all off though, and you seem to have both.

So Gitsplitta is running a competition, the Mantis Maker Challenge, and I have chosen to create an entry. It seemed like a really fun idea and might actually get me to paint something because there's a deadline!
Here's what I have planned;
As the Mantis Warriors are a White Scars successor I felt he needed to look a bit more brutal and violent. I'm also going for a post Badab/end of M41 look, which explains the bionics and will explain the beat up armour once painted. The Mantis Warriors are on a penitent crusade and cannot induct new members until they have completed their task. As such I felt any remaining marines would be fairly rough and ready, stitched back together far too many times to count.
Check out more info. on the Mantis Warriors or even the many chapters they fought against and with during the Badab War.
Anyway I urge all Dakkanauts to check it out Gits competition if you haven't already.
Cheers for looking.

I kept looking at my entry for the Mantis Maker challenge, thinking something wasn't terribly right with him. Something about him screamed Minotaur instead of Mantis. I've chosen to create a diorama so that I can keep the existing model, but incorporate it in a Badab setting. The kneeling marine is a Sergeant and is the last living member of his squad. I'll have a wee bit of background fluff up for the confrontation eventually. I'm hoping this diorama allows me to do more from a painting and basing point of view.
I like the ideas you have for the necron models. Not being familiar with the actual kits (yet) I can't see anything that doesn't look like it belongs together as you have built it, so good job. I like the look of the destroyer lord, the lash-whips really look like they are writhing around the main body. As a delivery system for the scarabs maybe you could add a few scarabs to the back of the body (or in a cage) where it can pick them off and attach on the target....
I'm liking the diorama for the mantis challenge. The pose is nice for the mantis and the other one is cool with all the robotics. If the mantis is the last of his squad are you going to be placing bits of his former comrades in the area between the two figures (as if they've been killed/ripped apart by the Minotaur)? Or do you have other plans for the space?
Edit: Oh, I see one body/head, thought that was a rock on first look But maybe a few more body pieces scattered about?

Cheers for the comment man, I think i'll be adding more dismembered bits to that base as you suggested.
Owing to the construction of the Minotaur and my clumsiness, he is now deceased. From his ashes, and the existing Mantis Warrior I present Battle Brother Einherjar
Thought to have been killed along with the rest of his Religiosa Squad, Einherjar made his survival known to the Traitor cultists infesting the Hive City of Sthalrin. The cultists had managed to down the Storm Raven gunship as it was en-route to the uppermost spires of the Hive. The gunship finally came to rest in the lower portion of the Hive, and a cultist patrol squad approached to loot the burning hulk. Unbeknownst to them Brother Einherjar still lived, and lay in wait in the wreckage. Taking two of his fallen battle brothers Chainswords, he launched himself from the Wreckage and slaughtered the cultists in mere seconds. Their futile attempts to stop him barely registering to Einherjar, as he wrought gory ruin on the heretics. As he stalked the Hive, slowly ascending to reach his brothers, he threw the cultists into disarray. Sporadic reports of a monster hungry for flesh chilled the traitor ranks, their eviscerated comrades lending truth to this rumour. Ever since the Liberation of Hive City Sthalrin, Battle Brother Einherjar has fought alone.
I'm not sure he has enough swords Looking great, love the cape especially, really dynamic. Nice use of Gk shield on the arm, too. I can'tell from pic, does the gun have a sling? I lurve those legs btw, they are so useful. Great job!

Cheers mate. The gun doesn't have a sling, I'm basing that on the Mag-locking of weapons onto armour mentioned in some 40k books... or I atleast think they are mentioned in some 40k books.
Nice pose. Looks just like the fluff describes him.
