As these are new units, and i haven't gotten their stat line and war gear options yet. I was wondering what the use was for the gunship, as far as i can tell, it is a moblie gun platform, am i wrong about that?

Its a souped up Land Speeder put atop a flying base for double the cost. The main advantage over a Land Speeder is the ability to move 12 and fire everything, and flat-out 36. The downside, besides the inability to get terrain cover: no Multi-Melta, but it can equip both Typhoon ML and Assault Cannon at the same time.

After finally getting a look at the stat line for this, i honestly kinda like it. its fast, and not effected by melta. plus it can bring some pretty heavy firepower to the table if you want.

Its not affected by melta, but its really affected by everything else...its not quite the same at AV11 as melta-immunity is at AV12. I do like the speed though, hit on 6's in combat and can still fire everything is nice.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

My biggestgripe about it is the mix of weaponry.

It is AV11 so you do not want it in the middle of a firefight. But it has an assault cannon with a 24" range. All of the other available weapons (with the exception of heavy bolters) have a 48"+ range.

As others have already stated, if I could take a multi-melta to go along with the assault cannon, I think I would like it better. If the assault cannon and heavy bolters could be replaced for a combination of TML, Skyhammer, or TL LC giving all of the weapons the same range, I would like it.

As it stands, I have a vehicle that is confused about its role as to whether it should be in your face tank hunting or raining down support fire from afar.

It's way to early to look at picking up the talon. Early impression is it's another overcosted sm unit that's better off not being taken for both the point cost and for the hit on your wallet.

Right now someone at GW is saying: "Ha! See!? I told you we shouldn't have told them about 6th!"

Yeah, this is one of those arm-pit releases GW sometimes puts out right before a new edition comes out(sometimes its entire codices)

Its clearly been written with 6th in mind so we need to wait to see what it can do within the context of the new rules.

Flyer rules will make them very viable, until then it's a overpriced gunship.

What will make a vehicle a flyer?

I assume the flying stands will become flyers, and if the apoc flyer rules are anything to relate them to, flyers should be quite good, though a tailored enemy list can down fliers easily enough.

If so, only a few armies can have flyers like SM, BA, GK, DE, Orks, and Necrons.

@ the OP, I wrote a pretty extensive comparison of the stormtalon to other C:SM FA choices here http://www.3forint.com/2012/05/stormtalon-why-do-you-want-it.html

Basically, if you are playing a standard SM list, it doesn't really fit in, but if you are playing a faster list to take advantage of it's abilities then it could be awesome
