This will probably sound really dumb, but maybe thats why I cant figure it out, its too simple? Anyways, my problem is, I CANNOT get my screen saver to friggin work what so ever. Ive actually gone to the screen saver options, set it up, and tried it to go off in 1 minute to test. I hit apply and then OK, the whole shebang, and nothing. I tried longer times and so on, but nothing. Ive never actually had a screen saver once I started thinking about it, but now I have a cool Mario one and ID like to see it on from time to time, but like I said, nothing. Is there an option Im forgetting somewhere that keeps screen savers and the like off? What am I missing here, because I havnt been able to get this damn thing to come on! HELP!!!!

Maybe if you restart the machine the new settings will take effect?

What OS do you have? What's running at the same time?

Does it never kick in at all, or does it go black instead?

Are you hitting the 'ok' button when you make your changes or do you hit 'apply' first, because if you don't hit 'apply' first, the changes may not take effect.

At the risk of starting a massive flamewar, I must point out that I have never seen an, "Annoying Mac Problem, Please Help" thread.

But I do wish KC all the best in figuring out his problem.

Back ontopic, yes Ive clicked apply and then OK. Nothing. IVe tried it a good 3 or 4 times. But I just thought maybe its my actual screen saver, Ill try switching it and see what happens. Be back with update, wish me luck

Try updating your video drivers. What video card do you have?

Yea, changing the screen saver did nothing, and all my drivers are up to date. No go. Is there an option somewhere to just shut off screen savers that Im missing????

I actually have the same thing KC (I've just never really cared), so it might be a Windows 7 thing.

To perpetuate the risk of a massive flame war, that would be because Macs suck and no body uses them

Now we sit back and watch the show.

Oklahoma City, Ok.

Well, I just have my monitor turn off after 5 min.
So, I went in and set mine and it came up in 1 minute?
I turned off the power savings setting before I did.

Have you tried the "preview" option?? If it comes up under preview, then it should work... If it doesn't then I fear there may be a larger problem that is deeper into the registry... which is no fun at all (as my job still won't let me mess with registries too much)

Outside the DarkTower, amongst the roses.

Have you changed your power settings at all KC?

Tried the preview and it worked, even when I changed the screen saver to see if it was that. Still nothing.

Deathshead - By change the power settings you mean what exactly? I might have, Im not sure Ive tried so much gak But yea, my monitor will shut off after X amount of minutes, like I said Ive never actually used a screen saver on here before (it never came on TBH) but I got this cool Mario one like I said before, and figured, hey I want to see this. Now its just turned into that why the fudge dont you work right PC?!

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

Sometimes programs running in the background will prevent certain things happening such as the computer going into sleep mode, so that might be your problem, although Avast has never had that effect on my computer(s).

Alternatively, if you have a mouse on a very high contrast surface (such as a light wood with dark grain) sometimes it thinks that it is moving even when it is not, which will obviously trick the computer into thinking that it is being used.

Power modes are normally common on laptops though some PC's will have them too where you can specify that after X minutes the screen will turn off, after Y the hard drives will go to sleep etc...

Power Settings menu is accessed through your Control Panel, KC. You want a screen that looks like this.

If it's on High Performance or the like, it might be disabling screen savers. Worth a shot.

Ah, OK, that's that one ruled out then. Damn computers. It's never been a huge stretch of the imagination for me to understand why the Adeptus Mechanicus treats them as arcane, mysterious objects with spirits of their own. I suspect my PC just likes to mess with me every now and again.

I would agree with that. Usually my computer runs like a champ, but then sometimes it just stares at me with glazed eyes and drool coming from the corners of its mouth when I ask it to show me an email message fething computers, they are as annoying as cars I think

Oh, just had a thought, do you have a wireless mouse or keyboard?

Looking around some talk about it even being something as trivial as the mouse.

Okay, lets rule all out possibilities with a problem with the mouse or keyboard. Unplug the USB receiver for the wireless devices, and unplug any corded mouses or keyboards you have.

Yes, what Grakmar said. There's been a couple of known issues with Windows 7 and wireless input devices never being considered to be 'at rest.'

Ayup, that was it. Unplugged the friggin whole wireless setup and PRESTO, screen saver. Ill switch over to my normal mouse that came with the PC and see what happens. Gotta admit, Im slightly annoyed by this

Automatically Appended Next Post:
OK problems are solved, when I plugged my mouse back in, it said it was missing some updates and so I installed them. Fixed the problem and now my screen saver kicks on and the PC goes to rest. Odd though, because I checked all my drivers when this first popped up and it showed everything was up to date *shrugs* Whatever, you guys are saints, and now I dont have to constantly wonder WTF my PC is doing
