Unhealthy Competition With Other Legions
|
Hello Dakka,
Quick question out of the box which of these starter sets gives me thebetter base models tpo get into the game and competative. We have an escalation league 15 25 then 35. I do not know too much about either army
I do know models will have.to be added to both but which is packed with more useful models in the start and long run?
Thanks
J aka Primal

This kinda question gets asked a lot, and the answer is always the same. There really isn't one army that's better than the other, any of them well get you in and going. The two yer looking at are both good.
Kaya is the hit and run Circle caster par exellence. A lot of circle is like that...fast, stealthy, mobile, hard hitting, but a little squishy.
The Merc set is also good. Magnus is a strong caster. Two renegades with him is kinda cool, and the mangler is a great jack. Mercenaries are pretty versatile all around.
Personally, I'd go with the Merc force simply because I like the more oddball stuff, and some of the models in the Circle army aren't appealing to me from a purely looks place. Also, here there's a few Circle players, but only one Merc player (me, a pirate army), and I like to go the road less travelled.
Again...ANY army composed of ANY units can be competitive. Do some synergize better? Yes, but there isn't a 'this army is better than that' in this game.

Thanks for your input. It is greatly appreciated I realize with warmahordes it is fairly balanced my wallet was my main concern with getting up to the competitive standard.

Not familiar with Circle other than that the 2P BB for Hordes makes them look tempting in a few months. The Mercs however is a great buy imo. It comes with one of the most used Solos in Rhupert. The guy is awesome, he's one of those that you almost want in every list. It comes with what should have been the Magnus battlegroup from the start with two renegades instead of one and a Talon. Going by the standard Journeyman rules you'll have to pick up the Talon as that's the "Official" battlebox for Mercs. The only thing left is the Riflemen, which I have no experience with, but everything I've read says they're a very solid shooting unit. They are Steelheads, which work well with Non Pirate/Non Dwarf Mercs in general, not just Magnus, and fit in well thematically with other Steelhead units if you choose to expand into them. The Magnus deal is a good start toward a Four Star Syndicate list, but one thing to be aware of is that the Renegades won't carry over to other warcasters as they're Magnus's personal warjacks. Still, it was a close second choice for me, just barely losing out to Ret because I'd already had Mercs once, and gave them up to fund a 40k army when I was still playing it. If I was to pick up a second faction deal today, it'd be the Merc one.

If you're looking to get into Mercs to do Pirates, the summer deal is actually a bad way to go. Especially since 2 of the Jacks(the Renegades) can only be taken with a version of Magnus. You'll also probably not use the Steelheads much since the Sea Dogs do much the same thing in theme and with actual support form the other Pirate models.
