I've not read the books so was wondering how the two season match up to the books. Are they like for like? Season 1 = book 1, season 2 = book 2 or are they over lapping?

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

From looking through wiki a week or so back, it seems some stuff has already happened that should have been in the third, and a couple of things that should have been in the second are being saved for the third as they where fearful of adding too many new characters. I did note that the third series, has been noted as only covering the first half of the third novel, a Storm of Swords.

Season 1 = Book 1.
Season 2 ~ Book 2.
There were aspects of it brought forward from the next book, and aspects pushed back until next season.
Season 3 will be the first half of Book 3.
Book 3 was huge (bigger than Lotr) and had to be split in two for publication over here.

The second season wasn't as close to the books as well as the first managed
but it will be like
Season 1 = Book 1
Season 2 = Book 2
Season 3 = Book 3 Part 1
Season 4 = Book 3 Part 2
Season 5 = Book 4+5
and we'll see how big the last two books are when they are published

Also, characters that become really important later on get a bit of screen time in book II, but just a bit, this means an actor sitting around on payroll without doing anything.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh. |

It's been rumored that if HBO keeps renewing the series, book 5 will be a double season as well in order to fit in those aspects of book 4 where they belong in the overall story.
Trying to do book 4 as it's own season would be tantamount to suicide for the series imho.

George R.R. Martin will never stop writing his only cash cow. He's going to stretch it out for as long as he can, and proceed to drive it into the ground until it's completely unreadable after a while. I believe it's the good ol' "major network sitcom strategy".
