Too much magic. I'd drop the level 2's to level 1's, and just power of darkness and signature spells.
Also, I've been underwhelmed with black guard. Maybe swap one unit for something else with more hitting power; like 3 cold one chariots; a block of knights, or a pair of hydras.

The level 2 on fire is hoping for sword and fireball.

The level 2 on metal is hoping for enchanted blades+Glittering robes/transmutation and searing doom.

As for the black guard, I have been meaning to try it out for a while. The whole point is for me to hopefully get either enchanted blades and mindrazor off or enchanted blades and flaming sword off. But I see what you mean about the hitting power. BUT I refuse to take Cold ones on account of me sucking with stupidity. Seriously, I have had a block of 18 knights with a BSB and a Dreadlord sit in my deployment zone all game because I failed stupidity every turn. And, I've kind off gone off hydras too recently for no explainable reason.

I wouldn't bother with both the hero mages, I'd go with just 1 or the other as it's a lot of points for some fairly redundant coverage. It comes down to what you're more worried by- ethereals and regen gribblies, or Ogres. Adding in a pegasus hero would be very useful indeed.

I'd swap the Pendant for Lifetaker, the mage shouldn't be getting so she doesn't need a ward save.

Standard of Discipline would be nice on the Warriors.

I wouldn't bother with the standard bearers on the Black Guard unless they're going to have magic banners. I'm also not really sold on the champions with magic kit, they are a nice addition but with Cauldron and Shadow magic support you don't really need anything more than 20 BG with a musician, which comes in at a very low 267pts. I'd put the points saved towards more shades- you might also be able to cut 6 Xbows to save some points, which can be more shades.

Each bothers me in a different way. I am not sure which does so more though. As for the pegasus hero, I thought about it but couldn't nail it enough for my liking.

I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

I take these guys to give me dice, so I want to keep them as cheap as I can.

Valid point, no argument. I am thinking of taking the banner of murder on one block and flaming on the other

Granted, whils I have been using shades more and more, I am still not quite sold on them. As for cutting more crossbows, that would take me below my core allowance.

I´d get two as their brutally effective, possibly the most underpriced unit in the game

I've never found hydras to be as effective as people claim they are.

Hydras are wonderful... so long as you have other things your opponent needs to worry about as well. If you don't... he concentrates all his firepower on it and it evaporates on turn 1. Sure, you can use this to your advantage as well, but there are other things I can do with those points that is just as nasty and significantly less obvious.

When I run Hydras, its in a low-magic target saturation list - dragon, manticore, as many hydras as is legal, cauldron, big unit of COK... you get the idea. Either he concentrates fire to neutralize one threat... and the rest get him... or he spreads fire and doesn't kill anything... and they ALL get him!

Obviously needs a lot of points, I prefer 3000 for this concept.

General: Dreadlord, Repeater Crossbow, Heavy Armor, Sea Dragon Cloak, Dragonhelm, Pendant of Khaeleth, Crown of Command, Soulrender, on Black Dragon: 577 points

Heroes: Master, BSB, Lance, Heavy Armor, Shield, Sea Dragon Cloak, Hydra Banner, on Cold One: 214 points
Death Hag, Cauldron: 200 points
Master, Beastmaster's Scourge, Heavy Armor, Shield, Sea Dragon Cloak, Ring of Darkness, on Manticore: 336 points
Heroes total: 750 points

Core: 31 Repeater Crossbows, Shields, Full Command: 360 points
20 Dark Riders, Shields, Full Command: 395 points
Core Total: 755 points

Special: 11 Cold One Knights, Full Command, Crimson Death, Standard of Hag Graef: 392 points

Rare: 3 x War Hydras: 525 points

3000 points on the nose.

Why the big unit of Medium Cavalry Dark Riders? They tend to get ignored... and then co-charge a target along with one of the monsters to provide ranks. And they have enough speed to reach targets that the dragon or manticore have flanked, or to hit the flanks of a unit the hydra(s) are going after. They're also good for steamrollering enemy maneuver control units, and moderate warmachine hunters. The big unit of crossbows is also a good broom for sweeping away enemy maneuver control units, and serves as a late-game combat block as well.
