My FLGC is having an 1850pt tournament on the 30th to say goodbye to 5th edition rules...why they are having it AFTER 6th Ed. is released is beyond me. Here is a tau list that I have prepared, please Crete it and criticize it. Offer suggestions and tactics. I will explain my thinking for each unit below the army list. Thank you.

HQ-

Battlesuit Commander- Shas'o: (292)
Cyclic Ion blaster, Fusion Blaster, Missile Pod, Hardwired blacksun filter, hardwired multi-tracker
BODYGUARD 1) (78): Fusion blaster, TW Missile Pod, Hard wired blacksun filter, hardwired multitracker, hardwired target lock
BODYGUARD 2) (92): Airbusrsting Fragmentation projecter, Fusion Blaster, Missile Pod, Hardwired Blacksun Filter, hardwired multi-tracker, Hardwired target lock.

ELITE-

Stealth Squad (205): Team leader (multitracker, marker light) 6 Stealth suits

Stealth Squad (205): Team leader (multitracker, markerlight) 6 stealth suits

TROOP-

Fire Warriors 1(100): 10 warriors, 6 pulse rifles, 4 pulse carbines
Fire Warriors 2(80): 6 warriors, 6 pulse rifles, Shas'ui- Markerlight
Fire Warriors 3(181): 6 warriors, 4 pulse rifles, 2 pulse carbines, photon grenades- Devilfish (smartfire, multitracker, blacksun filter)
Kroot 1(70): 10 Kroot
Kroot 2(70): 10 Kroot

FAST ATTACK-

Pathfinders(197): 6 pathfinders, devilfish (disruption pod, 2 seeker missiles, smart fire missile

Piranha Squadron(155): (fusion blaster, blacksun filter, targeting array) x2 one has a target lock.

HEAVY SUPPORT-

Hammerhead(145): Ion cannon, 2 seeker missiles, 2 burst cannons, disruption pod, blacksun filter

Broadside(75): Multi-tracker

Broadside(75): Multi-tracker

Deployment: pathfinders and their devilfish begin on board (preferably in middle) Fire Warrior squad 1 begins on board and hops in the pathfinders fish ASAP, Fire warrior squad 2 deploys and camps, holding objectives. Kroot and Stealth infiltrate to delay enemy advance, distract fire, and hold objectives. The Commander and his 2 friends will slide up a side of the board having enough fire power to attack troop or tank, and up to 3 different squads, while being supported by the hammerhead or devilfish(from pathfinders) The hammerhead will camp middle of the board, only moving to get sight on the enemy, while 1 broadside is placed in each of the deployment corners(This forces the enemy to keep his units spread thinner) The Piranhas will go up the middle in front of the devilfish. Fire warrior squad 3 comes in from reserves strictly to rush across the board and take/contest objectives.

Thank you for reading, your input means a lot. I'm fairly new to this army. The blacksun filters ar'nt commonly used however the 1st game in the tourny is Dawn of war, and I know there will be a couple necron players- Doesn't hurt to be prepared.

I only have the 1 hammerhead and 2 broadside, and not enough extra cash around to get anything else. I agree with the suit team as far as they are a little bit of everywhere with their loadouts and abilities. This will change

The markerlight on the 6 man camping squad is basicly 20pts for a markerlight, as you said, and I had considered removing it before. I think I will, and instead will add a couple more men- only because there wont be much shooty stuff back to help out.

I believe you are wrong with my stealth warriors, asthe team leader has a markerlight and the burst cannon, he can shoot both because of the multi-tracker... corect me if im wrong, bbecaus eif i am, i will be removing the upgrades.

I didnt consider the blacksun filter on the piranhas and range of the weapon. ill replace this with a disruption pod

I had varried weapons on the warriors incase something happened and I would be better off assulting, say to get into range to contest and obj, at least I could fire some weapons and then assult. However, I guess I can change this to pulse rifles on all.

Photon grenades were in there becaus eI had 6pts left, and nowhere better to put them.

Ill consider taking off the smart fire on the devilfish, however I only have 2 devilfish, and If I run out of other options for things the points will surely go back to that.

I also have 5 vespids and the leader (so 6 in total) Should I use them?

As stated above, your HQ is trying to do everything at once. That can work if you roll well, but never EVER count on rolling well.

Your 10 man Firewarrior squad should honestly just have 10 Pulse Rifles. Pulse Carbines are a novel idea, but I feel that they don't work all that well in practice.

The Stealth suits is a good Idea I think. They have excellent fire power and are protected from heavy hitting long range weapons(missile launchers, artillery, lascannons etc.)

Vespids are alittle too pricey I think. Leave them at home.

56 points left, I was considering a battlesuit 'team' or possibly removing 2 kroot from the shaper squad and adding another 6 fire warriors, however I'd need a devilsfish, and even if I could get one, would it be wort it?

I still think the Stealths need to be removed entirely. I fight against someone who frequently plays Tau and whenever he brings them I can straight up ignore them if they don't wanna shoot at me. If they choose to actually engage me, they go down so easy it's a joke. He never fields them because they are that bad...they are one of the few units I would suggest more upgrades over.

Your Hammerhead needs to be a Railhead IMHO since at a Tourny you need those Transports down. All 3 of your Railguns shooting at one vital vehicle should do the trick.

Shaper on the Kroot is a waste, go ahead and keep the Hounds. 6+ armor save is just not worth the points you are putting down. If you salvage the Stealths/Shaper you should be able to fit in the Railgun on the Hammerhead and maybe 3 more suits outfitted for a different role than the suits you have now. Personally if you can being 2 groups of 3 suits I would bring one of them with MP's + Plasma and the other with Fusion Blasters and Flamers. I have always seen those do well and they compliment each other distance wise nicely.

Well I can see just about all of our helpful advice was ignored so I'll just stop providing it.

What was ignored? I changed the Battlesuit leader to an 'el, the devilfish lost the smart fire, and the infantry were changed to standard rifles. The one squad also lost the photon grenades.

I did remove the black sun filters from the piranhas, but forgot to change that on here, so those are actualy gone. --This is my fualt for forgeting to change on here

I only have 2 more fire warriors laying around, so making a squad of 9 is impossible to happen, and I dont have the pts to add 1 to each squad of 6...

The only thing i'm disagreeing with is the marker ligh ton the stealth...it is surely hard as any mountain to keep enemies within 36" and 24" being the range of the markerlight will surely come into use against daemons (who drop infront of you) un-expected terminaters or droppods, etc. There will surely be a use for it...IMHO

If that is what models you have then so be it but...

Battlesuits > Steathsuits.
After many hours of trolling Dakka I think the best use of Stealthsuits is a way to get markerlights that can move and shoot. Or stack them with a million gun drones and have a bajillion str5 ap5 shots. Battlesuits on the other hand can field a wide range of roles depending on how you deck them out. And they prolly should focus on one role per unit.

I take FWs in the smallest cheapest way possible and used them inside Devilfish to capture objectives. They suck in HtH and never seem to pump out enough shots to hurt MEQ. Until they are in rapid fire range, but then you only get one shot before being assaulted.

Hammerhead's railguns are super sexy. The option of solid or submunition is too good not to take.

The pirahna doesnt need a BSF. It only shoots 12". Night fighint is 2d6x3. So only useful if you roll a 2 or 3.

Ultimately though the best test is to just play lots of games play test things yourself and see what works with your play style.

I thought they smelt bad on the outside

Thank you^ and thank you Farseer. I think ill remove the shaper and try to sqeez in the railgun.

ill probably take out 2 kroot, and balance my Hq squad more for Anti-Infantry (keeping a single fusion blaster JUST in case-pesky transports) This is so because I belive i will have more anti tank, and I wont have pts to field another squad of 3 battlesuits.
ill consider removing the markerlight from stealth, but ill probalby take down a few smart fire missiles with it too

I have 2 fire warriors left over, not sure where or if to use them. Besides this I have a whopping16points remaining. Thanks for all your help guys, I know I can be stuborn and im making this on an app on my phone, so I miss a lot.

much better...

I think the marker light on commander isn't worth it.... also drop target lock and grab a multi tracker on commander with shield drones... this will add firepower and improve survivability..

drop shaper and IF you can get x3 hounds in both squads... I heard (and what I plan to look into) is that the LOTR wargs substitute for hounds easily. and you can get 6 instead of 2 for cheaper.

also drop the target lock on the piranaha... normally if you are comminting the fuison blasters to the fight... you really want something to die... fireing at something else doesn't help this task... plus you have cheap fusion on your stealths.

with as many troops as you have.. carbines on one squad isn't the end of the world... if anything use that unit as a speed bump...

however you do it definitly change the commander up some, multitrack and shield drones.

also one last comment for a very slight tweak... can you add one more pathfinder? squad of 9 better for morale checks, - 3 with rail rifles = 6 markerlights = 3 markerlight hits realiably. and for the seeker missles... spread them out some?

The app wont let me add a 9th guy to the pathfinder squad.

Heres the changes (Ive edited/ will edit them into my last update)

1) Removed team leader upgrade from stealh, and just gave a regular model the 2 gun drones
2) put 2 shield drones on comamnder (considering taking one off)
3) Added 9th pathfiner
4) removed shaper
5) seperated piranhas (can still shoot at 2 squads, harder to kill [An imobilised result on a squad forces one to die, kinda useless when I have an extra spot open for FA] and seperatable if needed)
6) added 3 hounds to the 10 man kroot squad.

2 points left. ye haa, thanks again for all the help
