For a base of a slug like minature i have i was going to do a slime trail with gloss varnish, is there any advantage and are there any differences between the two in terms of aesthetics?

Water effects can just go on thicker as far as i know.

For a wet looking shiny trail, gloss varnish would be fine.

I'd go for the realistic water/water effects myself. put a little on the edge of the model, and it'd leave a really nasty looking trail behind it....

It is generally, but if you are going for just that shiny kind of effect you will be able to get away with using gloss varnish.

What I would suggest doing if you want to go the slimy trail is when you paint the trail actually mix the gloss varnish into the paints that you use.

Some are, but i was referring to the water based ones GW, vallejo and woodland scenics sell. That stuff is just like a slightly thicker gloss varnish thats designed to be put on in thicker layers without shrinking back too much.

And yes, a drop of ink in gloss varnish or water effects looks great. You can even use a spot of paint for a more murky and cloudy effect.

if you have red and black ink you can make really nice looking realistic blood effects!!
green ink for slime
all sorts of brown/yellow/green paint for dirty water
