I'm curious to see dakka's thoughts on the matter of selling apocalypse sized armies for best results. Have you had better luck parting it out here on dakka/eBay, or selling it as one large lot? What's the biggest army you have sold, and what percentage of retail did you get for it?

I would think breaking it up would sell it better. Take the popular stuff and sell it with the unpopular stuff to make sure everything moves. Although I'm sure there is at least 1 person out there with rediculous amounts of money it would cost to apoc up.

Breaking up is best alot of people will not want the full thing unless cheap.

Always break up armies. Pretty much no one will want all of it except for one guy who is going to end up getting it cheap.

The larger your auction is the larger you have to discount it.. As others have said, break it up into manageable sizes to increase selling value

Break it up. People get into ridiculous bidding wars if they get just what they want. Full army and apoc size sales only cater to a very small demographic.

My experience on Commisssion painting is that, unless the whole set is amazingly well painted where is tickles the eye to see everything in formation, break it up. Well done army pics go a long way. Have a background even its just a black ground on your gaming boards. Advertise it everywhere, Ebay, Every trading forum, Barter town. I'm so much of a dirt bag I've sold things at Games Day.

The largest army I've personally sold was a High Elves army consisting of 150 pieces. It took 2 months to sell.
I sold it for 3.5 times the cost of the miniatures. The person who bought it from me had been eyeing it ever sense I finished up he last Caster.

You'll make more on the back end breaking it up also but it will take longer to get rid of everything because some units just better than others.

Agreed with all of the above.

Break the army up into units or individual models so that you are selling them as you bought them. This widens the amount of people who will be interested.

Most people will not be able to afford a whole army in one go and those that do may be put off by some of the miniatures included.

selling it as a whole you get more money but not as many buyers. Breaking it up you have more buyers but you may not get a ton of money.

I would sell it as a whole to start out and like after 1/2 a month if you have no buyers break it up

The only real reason to sell armies whole is because you don't want to spend the time and effort to break it up. Depending on what your time is worth, you may decide to simply put the whole thing up for bids.

Auctions for supersized lots aren't as bad of an idea as they were even five years ago though. Plenty of buyers are going to do what you didn't want to do: break it up and re-sell it. It's something that I did a ton when I was still in school for hobby cash.

The price of large lots has crept up considerably due to the increase in semi-professional resllers.

That said, even a single lot requires a lot of work. You want pictures of everything, showing the condition as clearly as possible. Even in a big lot, you'll get more if you have clear pictures of two land raiders, compared to a blurry pciture of two in the background.

The thing is, the pool of people who have the inclination, and the money, to pick up however many thousands of points of models at once is very very small. Most people buy models to add to their current army, not get one painted completely different from what they have.

You're much more likely to find four separate people who want to buy a storm raven, two razorbacks, a full tac squad, and a dreadnought than one person who wants to buy a storm raven, two razorbacks, a full tac squad and a dreadnought.

Give me that peskey army. Its worthless, and I'll do you a favor by taking it off your hands.... for a dollar.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Breaking it down always does better. I buy tons of apocalypse sized armies for CHEAP. Then turn around, break them down and make a tidy little profit.
