Subject: Wash (Shade) over primer or wash over base coat.

I am painting up some Tyranid that have I have primed white. If I am going to give them a sepia wash, should I put it directly over the
primer or should I put on a base coat of white first? If I should do a base first, should I use a foundation/base paint or would a GW white layer paint be fine?

If it is primed white, and you want to put a base of white, just do the wash/shade first. The base will make no difference.

Will the primer absorb the wash differently? Or will it stain darker or lighter than acrylic paint?

If it is the same color, it should look the same if you have a decent primer. What primer are you using by the way?

It should make no difference, prime white, lay your wash on and then just base after that so that the wash isn't anywhere you don't want it and your model is nice and neat.

I prime my models white, then do a brown or sepia wash. Then do the base coat leaving the recessed areas washed.
I agree with the Krylon. I use flat white primer. 4.99 at the local hardware store. Put whatever wash you like over that and it'll look great.

GW Washes/Shades over white primer work just fine. Just make sure all areas are primed and no grey areas left.
