I've noticed that the model shots in the FW books, such as the ones in IA:8 have been done in a maner that seems slightly life sized and realistic.
Does anyone know how this is achieved?
Are there any tutorials out there for achieving this effect?

It really boils down to there background and surrounding landscape.. Once that is seamless and realistic, it then is easy to scale things to make them look life size.. I don't have any tutorials on it, but in execution its not to difficult to do, just difficult to make it look believable..

This is the type of work I'm talking about.
My web searching hasn't turned up anything either.

I can't give you any tutorials, but I can give you a few tips because I've just started taking proper photos. First up, make sure you pose your models properly so they are doing something in the shot.

Shoot from as low as possible because it looks cooler than taking a photo from the same angle (ie high) that you usually see them from.

And final one, get a big peice of green cardboard or something and use it like a 'greenscreen' so you can easily photoshop stuff in later!

Oh, and get photoshop, I just started using this at work and I love it.

Barring your Photoshop skills, using a low angle and suitable terrain pieces work just as well.

Very true, the closer and lower the angle the more believable it looks. You can also use a number of filters via photoshop (or any other good editing suite). Just make sure the digi-cam has a macro setting and you know what its focus range is.
As for backdrops, you can just green screen it, then add your own like this;
