Okay, so Im gonna ask a question I tried before, but in a little different way. I want to get the WW1 look that the DKoK have, but I dont wanna pay the money. The Greatcoat line from Wargames factory just arent my thing, and Im not sure about any other alternatives that are plastic and in 28mm. I mean, is there a cheaper way to get ahold of DKoK I dont know about? Or do you just have to fork out the piles of cash (I live in the US, to buy it and get it all over here, just for the 1000 pt army I run, it costs $500, which is nuts for 1000 pts) And Im normally one who really indulges his hobbies, but I would really rather find a cheaper alternative to work with a little. So, can anybody help me?

Krieg! What a hole...

What is your list, by the way, I am making a DKoK army with FW models and I doubt it'll be that expensive.

Basically:
Lord Commisar w/PW and carapace
Platoon
Platoon HQ
Infantry squad
Infantry squad
Infantry squad
Infantry Squad
Veterans w/chimera
Leman Russ Battletank
Bane Wolf

So basically 5 squads of DKoK troops, a command squad, a Ryza pattern LRBT, the chimera and bane wolf (which ofcourse are just GW expensive), and the Commisar. Totalling over $500 new. The FW stuff together costs about $455. SOOOO, yeah. I suppose I could mech up and run it for cheaper, but I wasnt going for a mech list. But the focus here isnt on lists. Even if you cut it down a bit, to say $300, thats still ALOT for just a 1000 pts list.

The key to building an army like this is manageable chunks.....buy sections every month or so and it soon adds up

Imo do it slow with FW

It sounds like you wont get too much enjoyment running around getting head bits from company X, bodies from company Y, guns and tanks from company Z, and then pray they're all to scale with each other

WGF's greatcoat shocktroops will see you kicked and maybe banned from a tournament...

I am actually shocked that Steel Legion has not yet been mentioned.

They might still cost you, more than a regular army, but it'l be cheaper than buying forge world. Theyre still easy enough to find online and second hand.....

And so will any other 3rd party alternatives I would assume?

Because they're quite a different look? I suppose if you're desperate enough for any gas masked troopers though

if the manufacturer is less well known, you can kitbash them and pass them off as conversions, so, no.

And pray tell what exactly have you offered for the OP other than advice to suck it up and buy it in pieces? shipping from FW isn't cheap, so buying it in chunks is going to be more expensive than buying it in one go, which is expensive enough.

As for OP, another alternative, could be Victoria Lamb miniatures. You'll need to do some green-stuffing to make the kilts look like coats, but it's one way out of not paying FW prices (or dealing with FW wait times). Otherwise, I have nothing else ot suggest other than pointing you towards kneadatite and some sculpting tools. However, if you are dead set on getting DKoK, If you hunt out enough on ebay, kijiji or any other place that sells second hand stuff, you might get lucky and win out. I wouldn't hedge my bets on it though, the deals are hit-and-miss, and even then, given it's not a metal miniature, there's a lot of breakages to deal with. I've never had issues with metal second-hands.

EDIT:

$300 is not alot for a 1K points list. Even $500 isn't that much. It on the high side of average, you could easily expect to pay as much from any other force.

Personally surprised no one has mentioned this.

Take the troops lines from the Gorgon transports, and slowly cut them apart, a little GS work will be required, and some of them will very difficult to salvage, but it works out way, way cheaper. Mix in a squad of normal DKOK, and voila! You've got about 50 DKOK for $75.

Well I guess conversion wise you could do Warhammer Fantasy Men at Arms with Pig iron Heads and lasgun arms

As long as no one recognizes the pig iron heads, you'll have yourself some ww1 trench guard

Troll forge also have some varying types of soldiers. The one on the far left and the one in the middle

Pig iron should pass muster; most of the model is from GW product, and Pig Iron productions don't pretend to belong to the GW universe or use anything explicitly from the GW universe, so I don't see why there should be problems. Still, best to keep your eye open for the puritans....

Kenshin's stuff looks solid, so I say go with that, find a 3rd party discoutn distributor (Go to the top of this page, click to see all ads, and find the one nearest you).

Well, I cant say all of that was helpful. But I suppose that the armeggedon troops wouldnt be horrible. Im not the best with greenstuff though. And by not the best, I mean that a drozy 5 year old kid could probably do better than I. And honestly? I picked up all my 1,000 pts armies, excepting my IG for well under $300. I think I only paid $175 for my whole Space Wolves army. So maybe Im just too used to playing marines and havent yet expeirenced huge cost. Anywho, I do thank all of you for your ideas though.

Ahem, actually, I just read that seperating the Gorgon Troops thing, and I honestly dont think that would be impossible. It might take me a little work, but that looks nothing as hard as I was thinking it might. Thank you winnertakesall, so so so much. ^.^
