A number of years ago i recieved a box of metal lord of the rings models, namely a metal version of the fellowship from return of the king (merry and pippin in armour, gandalf the white etc). Cant seem to find the box itself on the GW site but you get the idea. Now im not into it enough to warrant buying whole armies, so was wondering if people had suggestions to (using what i have) set up a small standalone game similar to the mines of moria. What kind of numbers of orcs etc would i need? Maybe a morder troll? maybe theme it around the battle or pelanor fields or something? or the black gate? Also any scenario ideas, again like the moria set, would like to keep this little box as tied to the film/book as possible

any help would be awesome btw.

I'd suggest a "black gate" scenario, so a couple of trolls, a box of orcs and another of the elite orcs, and perhaps a nazgul or two. Should balance out with the fellowship in power- aragorn is expensive and nails at that point in the story.

I would have to agree, if you want to have the entire fellowship. If not, take out a few characters and add some gondorians before moving on to the ranks of Mordor. It seems the Black Gate is the most compatible with what you have got so far. That is, unless you want to have different scenarios for each character(s) all rolled up into the RotK. (Frodo and Sam in Osgiliath, Gandalf and Pippin during the siege, etc)

Thanks for the advice, i was looking into it as a cheap standalone that wouldnt require the moneysink of the full hobby the heroes box i have is gandalf the white, eomer, eowyne, the armoured faramir, armoured merry and pippin, legolas, aragorn and gimli all on foot. So from what i can gather, guessing the easiest way to do a standalone would be maybe a pair of trolls, and maybe 2 boxes of orcs, maybe requiring the heroes to hold out for a certain number of turns? build a little version of that ruin outside the black gate (i forget the name)

Another suggestion (though not entirely a themed campaign) is Battle Companies. It uses minimal models and each model in a battle company can gain skills and wargear. As you play, you gain influence points which can be used to buy items/upgrade units more/recruit more members for your warband.
