Hi All
I'm slowly building everything in the IG codex, just for giggles, and i'm not really sure what the best CCS layout would be for Stracken and Creed.
I generally run a bog standard CCS with four plasma in a chimera but this set up doesn't feel right for either of them, so how do you run them? fluffy answers are also welcome
I feel Creed should be more of a gun line officer, so maybe a heavy weapon in there
where as Straken should probably be able to remain mobile and ready to assault, so no heavy or rapid fire. Melta maybe or just keep it cheap with shotguns/las pistols combat weapons, maybe a medic as well.
thanks
Spank

Creed goes good in just about any squad loadout(foot, chimera, heavy weapon team, plasma spam). His best ability is letting any unit outflank. Outflanking a demolisher squad or bane wolf squad is brutal. Throw in an astropath to help the outflank.
Straken goes good on foot, in large blob gunlines. His best ability is his aura of fearless and assault buff. I have seen him in assault kits jumping out of an outflanking vendetta, but his squad is easy picking out alone.

I agree with the Doc. I use Straken in my power blob army. My setup for him is:
Everyone get pistol and CCW
Medic
Bodyguard X2
and thats it. Straken is very expensive so you gotta keep him cheap in my opinion. Keep him surrounded by blobs for the cover save (if firing through troops still do that) and use him to punch MCs and Dreadnaughts that try and stop your blobs from reaching the juicy everything else in the enemy army.

40k is as exciting as riding a pony, which doesn't sound very exciting.......
But the pony is 300 feet tall and covered in CHAINSAWS! |

Both characters seem like good buys for a mostly-infantry army. All advice subject to change under 5th edition, for this reason I won't be super specific:
Even with cover saves, IG command squads are fragile for their cost. The defensive upgrades are useful but expensive. Under the current rules the best protection is to be in a chimera. This also extends the order/ability radius because it is measured from the vehicle hull rather than the character's base. I would always put these characters in a transport.
Creed - remember that for 4 orders a turn, you would be better off just taking 2 command squads. Make sure you have a valid reason for using the outflank and special order abilities. If the close combat special order is the main reason you are taking Creed, maybe Straken is a better pick. I know at least one guy who takes Creed+Kell to give sure orders to his HWSs. This is effective, but I'm not sure if it is worth the expense.
Straken - I agree with portugus, keep his squad cheap as most of them will get killed. Pick 1-2 of the defensive measures - bodyguards, medipack are currently probably the best, although FNP/cover rules may change a bit.
Weapons, obviously creed could take a HWT and straken 1-2 assault weapons, but keep in mind how you want to use these squads and if your enemies will target them. Will you really get to fire much?
Above all keep the cost of the squad well down. Remember that IG CCS are still very fragile units and the upgrades really stack up without adding much toughness (cover, FNP, armour, can all be cut through by the right weapons) and many things in the game will still wipe the squad easily. Give them what they need to do their job, don't try to make them a super-unit.

Strakken > Creed.
Doesn't matter what you put him with, it's just fodder to get him in close where he is all kinds of fun. (Once killed me 5 assault termies with him.)

Thanks guys, so straken with some basic vets and maybe a medic seems to be the way to go.
Creed i'm thinking Kell just for fluff and a hvy weapon team of some kind.
@crimsonking-2120, sorry mate doesn't work like that. Was faq'd in the BRB, the example used I Gabriel Seth but result is the same fixed strength weapons don't benefit from the +1 strength, thusl making Mogul Kamir the worst character ever.
@bounty hunt
It's not a matter or either/or, I'm slowly building an infantry company and a long the way to stop myself getting bored I've been building all the characters. Fully plan to us both at 7000 points plus, hell might even outflank straken to give al'rahrems platoon a boost
At smaller points though I doubt I'll use creed in a chimera or guard cooker, just because the only time he makes it into my lists is when I'm running all walking

As has been pointed out, the rough riders' hunting lances don't recieve the benefits of furious charge. Shame really.
And this is the sole reason I take creed. I love rough riders. I've got three squads of rough riders and my opponent always forgets about the third by the time they come in. Awesome.

I haven't had a chance to run Straken, but if you can effectively do a CC/short range shooty army, you should be fine.
Creed needs two things-maneuverability and survivability. Medics help keep the manses alive, and I personally favor GL's for their range and power, though this might change with the new rapid fire rules.

Ok
This is what I'm thinking, please note these are kind of meant to be fluffy.
Straken
Medic - CCW
Vox - CCW
Vet - CCW
Vet - CCW
and for hig points games and giggles Nork Deddog smaller games and points allowing two body guard instead, what do people think about a Standard?
Creed
Medic
Plasma vet
Plamsa vet
Vox - higher points Kell (for fluff)
Body Guard
Body Guard
that's three look out argghh and FnP, possibly add a chimera depending on 6th.
