Hi all..

Here's another cheap home-made spore in progress.

I'm trying a totally different spore concept this time..

Ingredients:

-Small plastic bottle
-drinking straws
-toothpicks
-table tennis balls
-hot glue

Step 1:

I cut out roughly identical leave shapes from a small plastic bottle. I then drew staight, horizontal and vertical lines across them using hot glue to add some detail.

Step 2:
I then Glued the leaves to the base (CD) and starting putting together some kind of structures on the inside of the leaves that would hold the pingpong balls in place.

Step 3:

I then glued some pingpong balls to the toothpick frame. To represent hatched eggs I cut a cross shape in the balls and then flipped out the four segments..further fragmenting each with additional cuts. The balls were detailed with a vein like texture using hot glue as can be seen on the image below.

The gaps between adjecent balls were filled up with hot glue.
The spike sticking out from the egg-sac was made by placing 3 toothpicks so that the tips converged and then just pooring hot glue over it.

Step 4:

To make the egg-sac more interesting I connected some of them using the bending-part of a drinking straw, adding a biomechanic feel to the spore.

Step 5:

The result:

I added some spikes made from toothpicks here and there and some some metal-wire based tentacle things come out of one of the hatched eggs.

That's it..

Seems rather large, each indivual thing is awesome, will be good to see it painted...

Yea it's pretty big.. I figured it had to fit a bunch of gaunts or a large monstrous creature like a carnifex..

This design has multiple chambers so I figure this is the gaunt variant.. as opposed to the first one I made.. which looks more like a carnifex could pop out.

Yeah, I liked that difference. Makes sense that a carnifex and a gaunt brood wouldn't use the same species of spore.

Hey..

I don;t play the game so I know very little about the game rules and features. Reading about mycetic spores I came across a post mentioning weapon options for arming a mycetic spore including 'ripper tentacles'. I then decided to craft a bunch of tentacles as a module. I have no idea if the game rules allow these tentacles to be placed next to the spore as opposed to being part of the spore itself.

Anyway.. here's a unit of three tentacles. The elaborate 3d structure resulting from the whirling of the tentacles is difficult to convey on a 2d image...so here's a number of pics from different angles:
top

I tried to make them look strong and arm-like rather then flexible and whip-like.

This is how I made them:

Toothpicks and metal wire.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I gave the fleshy bits (basically the whole thing lol) a basecoat of fleshy brown/purple (1:1 Vallejo Vermillion and Royal purple)

Im quite satisfied with how the texture turned out..looks organic and disgusting

This hobbying stuff is too addictive :(

That... is .. AWESOME. I really love the spore pod. But moreso i love the tentacles you made. They look very gross and organic once painted up. and they are made with just hot glue over the picks and wire?

Thanks!

No secret ingredients were used. The tentacles are 100% picks/wire/glue... very easy to make.

The claws/blades were made from pieces of a pingpong ball

The 'suction cup' things were made from little rings, cut from a cotton swab stick.
