A spinoff that occured to me after reading the most recent paint-vs-not thread. I'm curious to hear from those who don't paint. I realize that many things (time, ability, interest) make it harder to paint, but...
What would make you more likely to paint your miniatures?
Feel free to check as many as apply.

Why does the "nothing" option imply I will never paint anything for any reason? Shouldn't it just mean that I cannot be externally incentivized to paint?
|
"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."
This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

I Like painting, so these two running arguements don't really apply to me.
Wish I had more time in a day, I'd hire out to paint other peoples, or give classes. Thats me, though.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

More random motivation. A lot of people I know just suddenly decide that they are going to knock out an amazing amount of painting one weekend.
Once, a few days before nova, I was up from 2 in the afternoon, til 2am, 2 mornings later, so 36 hours. I think I spent 32 or so of those hours painting, and another 2 were spent making a last minute trip at 9 at night to a game store across town for some basing sand. Never doing that again.

lol, nice.
People on the internet are like people in real life but bigger jerks. Don't let it get to you.
I can tell two things:
- My painting was pretty bad when it started. It is still not awesome, but it is leagues better. It takes practice.
- A fully, crappily painted army looks way better than gray plastic on the table.
Keep the faith, man!

I chose "Other," because the "Nothing" option isn't right for me.
For me, it's "Nothing. I'll paint them when I feel like it. For me, the socialization and game play are the draw to the games I choose."

I already paint my miniatures, but it isn't something that I get much enjoyment out of. Tournaments that requiring painting are why I currently paint. I also selected if people refused to play against unpainted miniatures it would get me to paint but that is a hypothetical reason that hasn't happened to me yet. I see myself as a gamer, not a painter, and potential loss of games is why I would be motivated to paint.

The ONLY thing I need to paint my miniatures is free time!
That's all that's stopping me. It sucks when I have to decide between playing, and painting. And given how infrequently recently I've had that decision I mostly just decide to play.

It's only going to get worse since Games Workshop want people to play with bigger armies.
I think it's a lack of foresight on GW's part that they don't see that the sea of grey armies will turn off a lot of people and could probably do more harm to their sales than the higher model sales does good.

I've painted some of my armies, others I have not and likely never will. None of the choices in the poll really apply to me because I don't really feel like I need to paint my armies in order to play and enjoy the game. To me painting is a separate hobby to miniature wargaming.

Both of those statements summarize my feelings on the matter. I really can't be led by a carrot to painting more. The process of painting is a chore and one I do only sporadically when struck by a masochistic fit of trying out a color scheme on a figure. Usually after a few hours of painting I remember why I do it so infrequently and abandon my brushes for months at a time.
I suppose another option you could add to the poll would be: "All of the commission painters suddenly disappear."

Time and skill. I am more inclined to just pay someone to do it, but I find it to be too. . .personal(?) to do so. Since I am horrid at it, it takes longer which means more unpainted minis. That said, all of my Tyranids, sans bits, are painted well enough to show at tourneys to be mocked. By me, generally.

Our differences are that I actually enjoy painting - and I'm rather good at it, having even painted for commission and sale on feebay with success many years ago (6+). Where *I* have an issue that that, while I like painting, I don't like endless repetition. I can't STAND painting Space marines, CSM... heck, ANYTHING that has tons of the same types of models.
I like painting character models to a high standard. I like painting individual vehicles. I do NOT like endless repetition. That's why the last year or so has seen commission painters get some of my money.

Ok while I do paint...sometimes. I'm not really a fan of it. I much prefer to convert models and play the game. Now some models I do enjoy painting and I will. With that said, however, I'm not that good but the other big hold up is time. Honestly I was rather disappointed in the poll options since most of them felt like they were attacking non-painters without a reason (requirements at tournaments, and people refusing to play) come straight to mind.
The biggest thing is time, going to college full time, and working a full time job, AND having a social life outside of wargamming leaves me with little time to sit around and paint. If tournaments started requiring them I would not be happy. If people don't want to play then I'm fine with that as long as you are fine with me assuming you are arrogant. So in the end I have to vote other with the write in of TIME.

Most of these polls and threads about this topic *are* weighted against those of us who don't paint like others think we should. You see a large number of purists in these threads who think it's "part of the hobby" and that you're doing "the hobby" an injustice by not painting.
These threads pop up 6 to 8 times a year, with the same results and the same p.o.v.'s.

The only thing likely to result in my owning more painted armies would be someone willing to paint them for me for free, or someone willing to pay to have them painted for me.
If you think it's so darn important for my models to be painted, you're more then welcome to paint them yourself.

Ive gone for NONE as i had a go at painting but they didn't look great and i like things to look good. Basically getting a friend to paint them for me for a small fee.... but this is going to take a while due to him painting more then 1 army (and im guessing most have more then 1 game/army too and him having a life). So i still want to play with my models until they are painted...
If GW released manufactured models pre painted then i would have considered getting them as i am not going to paint.
