1: More free time. (even when I do have a few moments to myself I have insufficient energy to get much painting done) Working as much as I end up doing, my time for both painting and playing is highly limited at best, and my energy even more so. 2: More examples of moderate painters. It often feels like an insurmountable hurdle to get better when I feel I'm rather poor, and a few examples that aren't GD-level painting would help. 3: Fewer painting elitists. When we don't have people like a lot of dickweeds on the other thread looking down their nose at me for not painting, or bringing too badly painted models, I'll feel more inclined to paint. If a bunch of jackasses shriek about how there's no excuse to not paint/paint poorly and how everyone should refuse to play with people who don't paint to their personal standards, the act of painting ends up seeming a lot like someone putting a gun to my head to do it, a chore I HAVE to do, instead of an optional thing that can enhance the overall gameplay experience somewhat. Really, nr.3 is the big one, nobody wants to do something they feel they absolutely have to. Even something you normally enjoy can lose its luster when it becomes a chore you MUST perform. As a great example of this there's a rather large culture on dakka (just see the threads that pop up about how everyone who doesn't paint is just lazy and disrespectful and etc.etc.etc.) that encourages this mentality, "I can paint thus you MUST paint" makes it less fun to even want to. ....... Also, if I can give the finger to these people? I gladly, joyfully, will. So it becomes the option that enhances my personal happiness the most to not paint as long as people act as if i have a moral obligation to do it. But really I'll get around to it one of these days, honest, for reals this time
