Hey everyone, first of all I would like to apologize if this topic has been posted many of times. As for my question, what army is good for beginners? why?

Ive read up on other sites that bretonians and skaven are pretty good to begin with. Problem is, bretonians don't interest me and the skaven have just to many models. I wouldn't of minded painting a billion little rats many years ago, but horde painting has been worn out by my tyranids.

Back to the topic though.....what army(armies) and why.

Thanks all!

I'd say the most beginner-friendly armies are:

Warriors of Chaos
Empire
Lizardmen

As always, the first question should be, what armies appeal to you strictly on aesthetics? Pick two or three and then research them/ask questions.

My answer is and will always be, the army that is good for beginners is the army that appeals the most to the player. It does not matter how easy an army is to play when there is no interest in playing it. In turn, it does not matter how difficult an army is to learn/play if the interest is there to play it.

Take the above suggestions; WoC, Empire, Lizards; I have no interest in Lizards, mild interest in Empire, and some interest in WoC. However, add to that list Vampire Counts which I have a strong interest in. I would choose the Vampire Counts. (obviously opinions matter in this scenario).

I agree with Rivet. It's all well and good being able to play with an army well, but you're not going to enjoy the hobby much if you dislike the models you're painting and using and have no drive to add more units.

I appreciate the response. To answer your question there, vampire counts are in fact in my top 3. The armies I found cool are in order of appeal:

1)Orcs and goblins
2)Vampire counts
3)Ogres

The only things that I can say I don't like about the O&G's is the fact that they have goblins! I really don't like the little guys. If I could make a good army(which in my mind effects how much I actually like them when I own them) then I think they would be great. Maybe you have better insight on them and if they are at all effective with just orcs.

Secondly, how are the vampire counts? By what Ive read they have some powerful heroes, yes? What about their core infantry and stuff of that sort?

And last, ogres. If you know anything of them that would be awesome. I really liked them just because I would have to paint so few guys......and they look freaking cool. Stat wise I hear they aren't all that bad either.

Thanks again for the replies guys!

I think you can build O&G without Goblins, I see a lot of Goblin only lists so I figure the reverse applies. I do not know about effectiveness however.

I love my Vampire Counts and they are indeed a great army. Their core is not going to win many combats, but that is by design. Their lords, specials and rares make up for that.

Ogres seem to do quite well and a lot of people enjoy playing them.

1) Orcs and Goblins can indeed be played without Goblins! Goblins are very useful as cheap tarpits, so if you're the kind of guy who likes to tie up units then smash them with a flank charge next turn (as am I), then sadly this won't work. There are many more cunning but brutal and brutal but cunning tactics you can use without them. However, it does depend how Anti-Goblin you are. Not including hordes of normal Goblins is fine but many units that are very useful to an O&G army, such as Wolf Riders and Artillery, are Goblin based. I'd consider looking elsewhere if you want to play quite competitively and don't want to include this.

2) Can't really answer this, but it seems vigilante can answer this.

3) Ogres are indeed a fairly good starting army. You can get a large army painted fairly quickly and they include a good mix of Combat, Shooting, Magic and Monsters. The only issue is you don't get to experience normal infantry really. They are however good fun and effective to play.

If you think painting Skaven is too much of a horde for you, then stay away from Vampire Counts. There is probably no horde army larger (in any game) than the VCs.

Orcs and Goblins are horde as well.

If you don't want to paint a horde, then the Ogres seem the best option for you.

counts are a horde, gonna take alot of painting. There are ways to run them with a fairly low model count, but its kinda one demensional and still not a small army (just not as big as zombie/skelly spam)

O&G is pretty much exactly the same as above

Ogres are not hordeish at all, since their goblin choice is really unneccessary to field. Id go with Ogres as well. they are a strong army with low model count.
