Paint before assembly. I tried after assembly and am having a hard time getting to certain spots where it is visible but not reachable with a brush.

Which models are you referring to? I know that each range has a few very challenging models but what paint scheme you chose plays a part in that as well.

My advice is paint as you assemble... on all things miniature related. so do the base and legs and body, paint up to a point where its basic and future mistakes aren't fatal. Then attach arms and head (I base coat these before they go on) and so on.

My Cinerators were exceedingly easy to paint.

Albeit, my Menoth is done in a much easier scheme(silver armor, black cloth, white/light grey accents, gold weapon ornamentation) than the standard. If you're trying to do the studio scheme, I can see them beeing a bitch to paint.

These guys are just as easy to paint as 40k. It's only hard if you make it hard on yourself. That all depends on how picky you are on detail and how experienced a painter you are.

I find these much in the same, however much more enjoyable than painting anything in 40k. The only thing I used to have difficulty with was the glowing portions, but now after a lot of experimentation and looking at some articles I have it down to a science. I use GW paints since I have many left over, and unlike GW each faction book gives you a good guide on how to paint which is very nice, as well as some good illustrations on what they look like.

Here is my approach depending on the unit of course. WJ I paint before assembly but I also take note on which parts aren't going to be seen and spend minimal time on it. Normal infantry I fully assemble unless their pose restricts my painting certain areas, at that point I paint and then assemble. Still pretty easy to do.

I actually enjoy painting WarmaHordes minis more than 40k/WFB, mainly because I'm painting a lot of different things, whereas in those games you have to paint the same thing over and over again, with some slight variation (I'm looking at space marines)

I find that aspect quite appealing. I HATE painting groups of infantry...and in Hordes I dont have to use any at all if I dont want to.

They definitely are different from hammer figs...I don't like the paint then assemble tactic personally, but I do work in stages for my models. So for butcher right now I did the base for everything, but then my focus became just the lower half of him, now I am working on his torso. Last will be his arms/axe then finish with his head and base.

I'm kinda in the same boat, I've just about finished my first two jacks and they were fun and pretty easy to paint. Now I'm working on my winter guard infantry and they are requiring a lot more attention than a space marine. I also feel that because there are so few models on the table I'm more obligated to paint them to a higher standard.

I'm exactly the same.
Normally I spend about 20 mins to paint a regular trooper for 40K but I have spent about 2 hours on 1 solo.

Actually, I paint them at the same speed, but I use the lower model count
to justify painting more models from more factions at a time.

I totally get that point of view. I need to work on a shift in my thinking, for the last 6 years I've focused on painting Characters and SGTs and the like at the highest level I can. Basic troops I just paint to a table top standard. With the level of detail of each model in this game, I'm temped to paint everything up as best I can....

I can totally see that my Khador force could take me as long to paint as my GK (so 60 models vs 20)

Yep same. Every solo is character quality. Especially those major centerpiece solos like Morraig. Infantry units garner alot of attention from me, and when those things have SO much detail, it is a bit intimidating to paint them. My Wolves of Orboros are taking forever, as I have to figure out what color to paint every little separate wrapping and cloth...

Good news. This is the best time in the hobby. Full of promise. GW lets us down each time and we know it but secretly we're hoping that this is the edition that GW gives us a balanced game that can also be played competitively at tournaments. I'm loving it.

Best tip i got starting out was to thin my paints a little and be as neat as possuble. This really helps with the chunky streaky look I was getting. I also never paint straight from the pot. Keeping your models neat will give you surpeisingly good results.
