Ive read various people referencing a ++ save on various forums but cannot for the life of me find any reference to it in the rulebook i have ( 5th ed). Is it just a typo?

Yeah, it's not an official rule, just a shorthand way of saying invulnerable save.

++ almost always means invulnerable save, however it can also be used as shorthand for cover saves (though I think +++ is the more common shorthand for cover).

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
Orks always ride in single file to hide their strength and numbers.

++ is most commonly used for Invulnerable Saves. +++ depends on the situation. I commonly see it used for FNP or Resurrection Protocols.

++ and +* are most commonly invun saves.
+++ is generally a feel no pain roll that I've seen.
