So I play Tau and was looking to get a little more assault in my gaming, so I picked up 40k Daemons......Only to remember that when it comes to bad guys, I'm not much a fan of Demons, more a fan of Undead (and any time I wanted to play a game of 40k, I'd end up leaving the Daemons at home and bringing the Tau)

Now here is the part that actually matters: I've been looking at starting up Vampire Counts .

So. Other than the obvious (buy rulebook, buy Codex, play games) any tips on what I should do? What I should look at first (maybe in other armies or things In VC I need to look into ect ect)

Personally I would look at going the ethereal route.

The etherial route works great... until you run into an army that routinely has magic weapons. Bretonnains, Chaos, and Dwarves can be rough for this.

CHAOS! PANIC! DISORDER!

Skaven with the warpstone weapons ( I assume they still count as magical?)

Check the fantasy army lists section for ideas of lists, you can go a la carte with what you see, there was a tournament winning list put up that was actually pretty cool, two terrorgheists only two ethereals but hey each to their own

I'm new to the hobby myself and I've been successful running two blocks of fifty skeletons with a solid hammer of thirty grave guard. Throw in a Mortis Engine and Terrorgheist and maybe some Black Knights and it seems pretty solid. I've beaten Warriors Chaos and Dark Elves... but lost to High Elves.

The one thing I am unsure of is what utility Ghouls have; whether they should constitute a greater part of one's core or not. Skeletons are cost-effective anvils. I think Ghouls must be highly situational as, apparently the corpse cart gives them rerolls against lower initiative enemies; if you could get rerollable poison attacks from said Ghouls that might be a larf.

I've personally avoided lists spec'd towards fear or ethereal because I thinkthat such builds are much too specialised. Just gone for solid choices really.

Don't forget Tomb Kings for the undead And as far as the Ethereal goes, they are a bitch to play against when you don't bring magic weapons. I completely forgot about the Vampire Counts on my flank in a 4-way battle when I was playing Dwarves and shirked the rune weapons for big guns... The only magic I had was my lord who got run around by an ethereal chariot which proceeded to rip my cannon brigade to shreds... Not my brightest moment.

Praise be to the Omnissiah

IG/"Legion of the Damned" - 5000 points (Cripes, when did that happen?)

Vampire Counts: 1000 points? Maybe? Either way... Welcome to the Jungle

Tomb Kings or Vampire Counts are good armies if you want to go the undead route. If you like the traditional trtransylvanian approach go Vampires, if you like a different more eygptian themed army go tomb kings. Here's another idea, it's not evil but it is assault oriented, though the codex is older. Bretonnia, you could have Brony Knights, you could have your Lord riding on Pinkie Pie.

You don't even want to know how bad I want to do that now.

I've actually found that Empire is extremely easy to convert to undead. However I picked up VC just to have the extra bits to convert a full army.

All you have to do is pin a skull to the head (pinning because it adds a neck) and it looks perfect! I do some extra things too, like add skeletal hands. But that's more just for origination. Alot of models look fine just with skulls added. Flagellants don't even need to be converted at all (They already look tortured!), just painted to be undead/ethereal.

I play my undead Empire as Undead, but to limit myself, I can only take lore of Life and Lore of Death. And I'm debating on the merits of witch hunters. (It wouldn't make sense at first... but the lore I'm writing for my army it could very well work).
