I got my rulebook a few days ago (one day before the rest of the world thanks to my being on this side of the International Date Line), but I just can't seem to make myself read it. i pick it up once or twice a day, read a few paragraphs, and then just get bored. It all feels so sterile and heartless-- the (tm) mark right there on the cover sums it up for me. It isn't a game, it's a big in-house ad.
I've been playing 40K since RT was first released, and I've pretty much always enjoyed it. I want to enjoy v6, but I just don't see that happening right now.

What exactly was suppose to be super interesting? I guess that sounds bad but the main Fluff isn't changing, and while the rules have changed reading rules was never really fun. Applying them is fun. Maybe go through the Codex with a friend while playing a official 6th Edition game and that way you can go through the rules you need to know?

GW has had a trend of putting trademarks and copyright symbols on damn near anything they print, regardless of who actually owns said trademarks and copyrights. They claim copyright on the chaos star which isn't theirs at all. They also claim Space Marines is theirs, as well as the following words: a, an, and, the, of, it, d6.
Please do not use those words without expressed written consent from GW.

So basically this:
"My GW book that contains rules for using GW models in a GW game feels like an advertisement for GW models..."
Maybe it is just me, but this post reminds me of hipsters that complain about how musicians used to be in it for the music but now they sold out to the man. How dare GW use their game to get people to buy more parts to their game. I will pour out a can of PBR in rememberance of the great company GW used to be before it became so mainstream.

Ha! It's been a long time since I've been called hip. I feel twenty years younger, so thanks for that.
Aerethan wrote about GW's slapping a copyright on everything, including things they don't really own. That's a major shift in attitude from when I started playing. WH40K is more product than game, or at least that's how it feels to me.
I guess I'm getting sentimental in my old age.

I think a lot of people have a kind of breaking point when it comes to GW stuff, a grimdarkometer if you like, which gradually fills the more time you stay with the game. The newcomers into wargaming, for whom it is all new, are at the beginning of that road and generally have a lot more tolerance (and enjoyment?) from the new material as it comes along. The longer you stay within the GW-niche, the more time you have to be exposed to the more scurrilous behaviour of the company; the cuts in models per box/the price rises, the recycling of rules and sales-motivated rules changes, the lack of any real development, kits that you are sure aren't as good as the stuff that came out when you were a kid (I'm looking at you Storm Raven! ) I could go on. This is then compounded with discovery, as you get into wargaming and start looking around the web, of other companies that do some of these things differently, perhaps even better. Of course, the size of this 'meter' is different for all of us, and of course some of those things listed above don't bother people, and many of course enjoy the familiarity and lack of rule change surprises. Your mileage may vary.
My advice is that oft-used expression, "A change is as good as a rest". Put the 40k book down, and have a look around you at the other games on offer. Arguably gamers have never had it so good, and GW's failings have allowed other games companies to move into the market. I was in a very similar situation to yourself - looking at a new WFB army, and thinking what a chore to get a new army off the ground. Looking back now, it seems utterly insane that something which is supposed to be for enjoyment instead almost seems laborious. Thankfully, while I was living overseas the GW trade-embargo made it impossible for me to buy that army, and so I looked elsewhere and discovered Infinity. I have to be honest, it re-invigorated my interest in both modelling and wargaming, and there is a strong chance I would have dropped the hobby entirely if I had stayed down the GW-exclusive route. It was a road I had tread upon too many times, and was over-familiar.
So, I would definitely advise anyone in the same boat to do the same! Companies like Maelstrom and Wayland have a fantastic selection of stuff that they can mail out to the Far East, I would take some time looking, perhaps get some friends to chip in as well, and go from there.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

Yeah, I'm a big boy and do as I please so dont tend to go in for the "it's all so terrible when you know the secret of GW" PoV that Pacific has but I was a little suprised to see how much placement there was in the 6th Ed book.
Mostly they are showing off the model ranges which is cool but to find a sub-box for White Dwarf shown in the body of the book was a little suprising.
I mean full marks GW you have shoe horned a reference the whole range or GW products and supplies but that just seemed a little redundent to me. You have spend £40 odd on a rulebook but have to be told there is a monthly mag as well.

I hope you did not pay Japanese price. Was going to buy it on Sunday till I saw the price, then I did a double take and decided I´ll skip the 6th ed rulebook in all its versions.

I know the feeling. When I asked a friend to explain the 5th edition rules to me, he just told me to buy the book and figure it out myself. So I did, and about a page in, I was asleep. So I guess you can either find someone to teach you, or just put up with being bored to tears. Also no, I didn't make up that thing about falling asleep.

DOOMBREAD wrote:The way I have always learned rules is by flipping through the book occaisionally for a while and, after a few weeks, I know the basic rules. Relatively the same here. However I also play with someone who is really attentive to the rules yet patient, so I generally learn from just playing with him, not bad for not having blown beaucoup bucks on a glorified D&D book. (In quality) EDIT: I also want to point out any company worth their grain will pimp out their product on, guess what their product. Blizzard does it(note the little booklet that has the mice and action figures), as does Wizards of the Coast with MTG and Dungeons and Dragons
