Cern scientists reporting from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have claimed the discovery of a new particle consistent with the Higgs boson.

The particle has been the subject of a 45-year hunt to explain how matter attains its mass.

Both of the Higgs boson-hunting experiments at the LHC see a level of certainty in their data worthy of a "discovery".

More work will be needed to be certain that what they see is a Higgs, however.

The results announced at Cern (European Organization for Nuclear Research), home of the LHC in Geneva, were met with loud applause and cheering.

Prof Peter Higgs, after whom the particle is named, wiped a tear from his eye as the teams finished their presentations in the Cern auditorium.

"I would like to add my congratulations to everyone involved in this achievement," he added later.

"It's really an incredible thing that it's happened in my lifetime."

It still needs to be verified, but this could be the greatest scientific discovery in a very long time. Well done CERN, well done.

Very cool, if not slightly coincidental with their current funding coming to an end.

Dear Madam

We here at the CERN are on the cusp of a major scientific breakthrough.

We hope to once and for all prove the existence of the Higgs Boson or 'God' Particle.

Unfortunately our funding is coming to an end, so we need your help in order to raise the monies to allow our research to continue.

Please send the monies in a stamp addressed envelop to;

A quite interesting thing about the LHC is that funding for it's construction came from both the USA and Iran, and it's nice to see places that don't particularly get on come together over something important.

Oh the irony, but yes, monies. I see the higgs boson, it's place on this graph is the same as your PIN number, quick, what is your PIN number?

Quite the opposite actually, when scientists want more funding they say "results are inconclusive" so for them to say "the results are now conclusive" is them essentially cutting off funding on the matter.

But they're not saying that. They're saying that the results are almost conclusive.

Oh internet, it never takes you long to sound cynical and cool about something, does it?

Meanwhile, I've got a fair of doubt that they would fund a scientific body from the 50s until today just to study particle physics, and then spend a few billion dollars on a collider and then cut the project off because the teams involved didn't release their results out this very month. It doesn't pass the smell test, though I'd be happy to read any article you could post on the subject.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Neither the USA nor Iran are listed there. I am sad to see our own contribution so low.

There are some old podcasts where Brian Cox takes people like Chris Morris around the facility back in 2007 and he mentioned about the funding.

I probably have, as I've read most of the collider threads, but it's not a term I would have committed to memory.

Yeah, but if scientists were asked if the world exists, they'd work on it for years and then come back and say, "We're not entirely certain, but it's probable that it does." In fact, them saying it's almost conclusive means that it's pretty much certain.

Scientists like to get things up to 99.9999% probability of being not an accident/luck.

They've got the Higgs Boson up to 99.9% so it should be all right but it could go wrong even now.

The thing I don't understand is why more Higgs Bosons latch on to a proton than an electron.

The Higgs Boson has the potential to be as useful as the photon or electron, that's what is so exciting.

What I mean is that the Higgs Boson causes mass in particles of different masses -- how?

Yeah, that's what I don't understand. Why does a proton have roughly 1800x as much mass as an electron? And why does this change depending on what atom/ion it's in?

I could explain that.

But, first I'd need to go back and get a PhD in particle physics. Then, I'd need you to get at least a Masters in math or physics.

I thought that all protons have the same mass if they are travelling at the same speed.

Obviously where you tried to take your claim was supposed to be funny, what with the silly youtube link and all that. But the original claim wasn't shown as part of that joke. Azazel, Corpsesarefun and p_gray99 have all posted in response to that original claim, taking it seriously.

I'm not asking you to do anything about this, it's trivial bs that doesn't need another post. But if you flub a joke in future, maybe think about saying 'sorry guys, tried to set up a joke and flubbed it, my bad', instead of posting snarky little responses.
