I am losing the will to live.

So far i have gone through 2 of the normal flying bases that come with the damn thing and they always seem to snap, it just doesnt give enough support.

I have also tried putting a flyinf stem on a flying base from a valk kit, still no joy.

What have other people used?

Have a look at these dude, think they should help a bit http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-Aluminum-Flying-Base-Stems-X3-warhammer-40k-/220868735937?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item336ccd73c1#ht_500wt_1054

Awesome! They will definately be tougher, but i woudl still get the issue where it is a very tiny suport. My Ark looks like it is dancing all the time due to wobble.

I have foudn a piece of 6mm thick clear round resing i used for a flyer base years ago. I think a 2" length of that shoudl be a bit more sturdy.

Will be keepign that link handy though, thanks.

**dont understand why they couldn't have made a mounting point similar to the recessed ones on the Anni Barge/CCB kit - worksa a treat!

Another thing I have seen done is using 2 flying bases of the same height, place them in one of the holes near the front and one near the back then glue the stands to a piece of mdf then decorate the whole thing as one base

I like to use a metal two part bolt that you can pick up at most large home stores (if you're in the USA).

It's incredibly strong and all you need is a solid base to mount it into. It takes a little more work, but it well worth it in the end I think. I've used it for a Ghost Ark and for a larger Eldar vehicle from Forge World as well.

When people ask me, "How do you build your army?"
I tell them its "The ten-zero factor, coolness ten, combat effectiveness... zero."

I use a couple of different methods;

1 - 1/4 Acrylic rod - either with a very strong magnet on the top, or goes into a 1/4 hole in the bottom of the model
2 - This: http://corseceng.com/omni-stand/
3 - What ron did!

All of my skimmers (tau ships) are on 1/4" acrylic rods, but I am considering another solution for my necrons...just have not built my ghost ark yet...

I use some of the corsec stands for my metal BFG ships, and they work great.

The metal two part bolt system is an excellent solution, and one of the cheapest. Also, I can overall recommend ron's blog, it is full of great modeling and painting guides.

A magnetic joint is a really good idea for flyers, so long as you can make it snug enough not to wobble in play - it means you can then disconnect the flyer from its base for storage.

I have gone for a 7mm acrylic rod - with a suitable hoel drilled in the bottom of the model. There is stilla little bit of wobble (got a bit enthusiastic with a file tryign to make it an easy fit.

I'm think a wad of green stuff put into the hold and used to make a mould will provide a bit more stabilty. It's not helped by the fact that the "spine" of the Ark, which is the only bit you can really drill into, is hollow. But even with a loose fit it is miles better that the stupid tiny flying stalks GW give you.

the normal flying bases work fine for me but I have to admit I'm always extra careful with my ghost arks. Since I'm always careful with my models it doesn't really matter to me :p

I always try to be careful, but the Ghost Ark in particular is very unforgiving.

The Barge kits has a great solution with the connection point being recessd inside the model. They couldn't do thsi witht he Ark kit as, if you build it as a Doomsday ark, the base goes into the gun rather than the "spine" i assume.

Ghostarks have enough thick places on them that you could use a 1/2 or 5/8 brass rod or tube. Available from your hardware store. My son has two ghost/doomsday arks and that's what I have to do for them cuz he's facing the very same problem.

I actually made a tripod standart once for my hammerhead after dealing with similar issues. basicaly you have the center standart wich go's in the hole andaround it 3 aditional standarts at an angle for support

Wire coat hangers are another good source of flyer supporting material. If the stand is too long they wobble a bit, but for a low-flying skimmer would probably work ok.
