Belgium, Mechelen!

Hi there,

I've had Necrons for Years, painted them into my self-discovered colour mixes, gave them butloads of fluff, pimped out C'tan in tourneys but people actually didn't care that much.
(I don't believe people should be over excited about everything someone does in the hobby, it's not like I think they should ;D)

Now, recently I started the Avenger Crons (Royal Court resembling the Avengers and an Iron Man themed Necron Army) and somehow people go crazy about it, they anticipate every model I make and relish the freehand Avenger symbols and witty color placement to match Iron Man's colors or the other Avengers, the paint job is decent, modeling is slightly okay, but then I got amazed about how much they love stuff like this and not a complete creative selfmade Necron Legion (now dynasty and stuff) which would be by the books.

I'm just wondering and hoping that I'm not alone?

Oh dear lord please post pics! That is something I have been dreaming of doing for a while now. I always thought the old 2nd edition Cadians would make pretty good Cobra troopers.

I will ask my friend if he has pics that I can post. It is a very nicely done force, and he has been working on it for ages. He goes to alot of tournaments, so perhaps others may have seen it and got photos too. I will look around.

If it's the same guy that won best army in Myrtle Beach (11th co tournament), then he wouldnt let anyone take pics of it.
I think it won on theme more than anything... paint was above tabletop, but I saw alot more "traditional" paint that was better.

People liked my Crimson Fists. People love my Valhallans however, even though they're painted only slightly better. Unusual armies that are executed well tend to get a lot of positive attention.

That Cobra Army sounds wickedly coowl, and if he won something with it it must be really sweet!

So as it seems, I'm not alone, and yeah, people indeed seem to tend liking very unusual armies or modern culture themed armies.

People go crazy over my Rhinos and dreadnoughts, i think because I took the religious crusader theme too much. I think it's the overabundance of freehand.

Is this a thread about awesome armies that manages not to feature any pictures of any of the awesome armies?

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”

The painting is crisp and nicely done, but that is not why it is cool. He has modelled every character from COBRA into it somehow. I am pretty sure he was at Myrtle beach, since we are in Jacksonville FL. I will be seeing him probably sometime this upcoming week, so I will see what i can do

I meant in general. I can understand a well painted army being awesome, but not a poorly painted one simply because they're all painted like iron man (even though it's sort of a cool scheme to go with).

It's not particularily amazing, because it's jsut thousand sons, but I'm having oodles of fun with my 1K sons army.

I've not done anything special with the obliterators, I'm just running them as chaos sorcerors. 6 squads of thousand sons, and the rest... the rest I'm having fun with.

All of my "flamer" wielding chosen marines are sorcerors throwing fireballs. Plasma gunners are casting green balls of sorcery. I'm working out how to do purple lightning to represent melta guns, and I've got a number of floating sorcerors as well to represent another weapon. When I get more money and more will, I will add a squad or two of sorcerors on disks of tzeentch as my raptors.

There's nothing special about building a 1K sons army, but it's tons of fun to just go nuts with it.

I like theme armies, but I have, personally, soured a bit on 'wacky' theme armies.

The infamous Blood "Letters" is funny, for a moment. A COBRA or Avenger themed force is kind of cool, but it would probably be more annoying than fun unless it's done "right."

Done "right" being a totally subjective thing, and I realize that saying this makes me a horrible person.

To be a good themed army, to me, it has to make an attempt to fit into the theme of the game. For example, an idea I bounced around for a while was a SM army in real-world camo colors called 'Sons of Patton'. I never went further as my attention span is short, but the idea is that they're a relatively standard Space Marine chapter that modeled their personal doctrine off half-remembered history and legends of a famous Earth general.

I like this idea (in addition to "because it's mine") because it's plausible int he setting, despite being an excuse to do Space Marines in very off-standard camo patterns and such. I still like this idea, though.

I never really even started this project (steal it if you want) I guess under the codex with the Traits system they'd have had some traits to make them a bit sneakier, and perhaps a bit more gun focused than melee. Modeled with mostly standard parts, so no trouble for opponents, really. Maybe customized commander-types.

Another idea was Cowboy Marines, basically SM using cowboy minis, with squads named after various Clint Eastwood movies. I'm glad I never got into this project. It would have been a mess. I probably would have needed to give an opponent an annotated army list to field it.

So my guidelines, subjective as they are, seem to focus on making sure an army fits within the setting and is not annoying to play against. The above COBRA army could work, I guess, as long as the Guardsmen use Lasguns that are recognizable, vehicles that are clear versions of canon vehicles, and the background kinda-sorta fits. I'd be fine if it was just IG Regiment XXX from planet Cobra, Serpent Worlds Cluster" or similar, and the link to the G.I. Joe was never more explicit than that in background.

But I'm weird, and a horrible person for not liking someone else's ideas.

I do appreciate the modeling effort in them, but not the difficulty in play.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

I like it. Not as over-the-top as I expected, btu pretty cool.

The blog's template is pretty rough, I admit, but the army is nice if nothing exceptional.

RutgerMan: I like your Warboss better than your iron man Necron, personally. As 40k minis I think the 'style' of Warboss makes it look more appropriate for the setting. Both are well painted, though.

@Balance : Thx dude ;D, your opinion gave me a better insight in stuff like this To me, you didn't seem harsh or rough at all, just realistic and to the point. My Avenger crons aren't horribly far from what they actually are in the field (thanks to the royal court's thousand options)

The Cobra themed army kinda dissapointed me, still it is a funky army nonetheless. Thumbs up for the guy who made them!

Avengers Crons are a black widow from being finished, soon I'll post a picture from the entire team. Any body else who still has an opinion about what my thoughts are about the topic, pls let free your mind

People really like it when the see one thing they like put together with another thing they like. At this point something like 90% of the internet is devoted to this practice.

I like to see theme armies, and fun stuffed based on other things, but personally I'm a bigger fan of well done fluff driven armies.
