Just wondering... if I was to take Tau as an Allied Detachment, would I have to take the compulsory Fire Warriors?

Nothing in the allies rules allows us to ignore the compulsory selections in the codex from which you are bringing allies. So that 1 troop requirement if you are bringing tau is forced to be fire warriors.

That also means you "have" to take a shas'el/shas'o rather than an ethereal.

I figured that was the case... thanks.

So do you still need the 1500pt cap restrictions to use commander farsight?

Yes, you do. Real question is: 1500 for primary and ally detachment TOTAL, or 1500 in the ally detachment only, ignoring the points from your primary detachment?

As written, I'm inclined to say that you can bring Farsight so long as your entire list is at least 1500 pts.

"He may be used in Tau armies of at least 1500 points..."
So, the Tau contingent has to be 1500 points.
Of course, this is all a moot point, as the HQ unit has to be a Shas'o or Shas'el.
If you want to run Farsight, make the base army Tau and the other army as the allies.

The FAQ states that Farsight satisfies the 1+ requirement for a Battlesuit Commander.
But you are right Grakmar -- I missed the "Tau army" part in Farsight's restriction.

Ok, so if I take Farsight with body guard, crisis suits and elite, 2x fire warriors and 3 broadsides, and my allied tau at 1500+ points, can I take farsight?
I'm looking at doing 1500 points of allies to join a 499 point army, just to mess with people in the 1999 point games.
