So, something that hasn't quite sit properly with my is the idea that whoever kills a single unit first gets free VP.

Why on earth did they add this rule in? Going first is already a huge advantage, did they not think that it was a huge advantage enough?

What is the practical purpose to this secondary objective?

Its not about going first, its about inflicting the first major casualty. An extra point to being more aggressive and less objective based early in the game.

That's a rule! Dang, I haven't got to that yet! Boo! That seems arbitrary to me, unless you could sucker someone into overcommiting themselves too soon to get a free point and leaving themselves exposed?

But it is about going first. If you go first, you can always disproportionately apply your long-range killing power to your opponent's most fragile unit, and you get a free VP. Put another way, if you go first, any ties become victories.

The only time this wouldn't necessarily be true is if your opponent brought an old-fashioned KP list and you brought MSU spam, but still...

I don't see how this rewards aggressive armies. Really, it rewards who can put down the most killing power first. Put another way, this just further rewards alpha strike armies for getting first turn. Really, what were they thinking, that leafblowers weren't powerful enough?

It may be there as a small balance to a last turn objective grab.

I think its because the other two Secondary Objectives can be achived by both players. Kill the enemy Warlord and have a unit in your enemies Deployment Zone.

If you're constantly conceeding this VP to your enemy you probably ought to rethink your army list or deployment.

Besides, with the new set up rules and the 50% chance of Night Fight on the first turn it shouldn't be too hard.

Watch Beasts of War's video. Its in the video section. I agree with them, it is to stop ties. No more "You won but I claim moral victory." Its "I win and I win morally."

Given that the GW design studio didn't bother to fix kill points, I very much doubt that game balance was a high priority for them. It's just (more) poor rules design.

After you consider the possibility of night fight, the alpha strike isn't that bad.

I've never had a problem with it. If you want to concentrate all your firepower on the enemy's weakest units, so be it.
As long as you don't mind being bashed in the face by his stronger units

Going second is a pretty big advantage. I always take second when I can just so I can deploy to counter my opponent's deployment and get final word on objectives. I just don't see a unit dying when I know where all your shooting units are. Throw in nightfight and seize the initiative and anything can happen.

First doesn't equal first kill.
There are lots of factors, amount of long range fire power, night fighting, what your opponent has on the bored, how tough that stuff is.
Go first against shoots daemons, how you going to kill one of their units first? Etc...

I find it [and the other missions] force people to change up their tactics. It also adds a form of balance. Now with Missions like “The Scourging” and “Big Guns Never Tire” Mission is going to also reduce SPAM List. Now you need to make sure you have a Fast Attack and a Heavy Support, just incase those missions show up. you are also going to need to make sure that you have a “Command Squad” to protect your HQ for because of “Sly the Warlord”.
There are those who will create “Clear The Table To Win List”, they will be called WAAC. Now if you are going to play Random Missions you really need to think about List Building.
“Taking On All Comers” list now will have to also be about the Mission.
