As I just said over in General: AlmightyWalrus wrote:Unusual Power Weapons are AP3 and use their own rules. The Black Sword is a Power Weapon that adds 2 to the user's Strength. Power weapons come in a variety of versions, including Power Mauls that are AP4 and add 2 to the user's Strength. A "Black Mace" would thus be both AP4 and AP3 and add 4 to it's user's Strength. 100% legal, trolololol.
Would modelling the Emperor's Champion with a maul be a legit way of giving him S8 I5 AP3 attacks?

This would be illegal under any interpretation of the rules.
Unusual Power Weapons are S(user) AP 3, special rules as detailed.
If the special rules said it was a power maul, fine.
They don't.
Therefore it never has the special rules for a Power Maul, and cannot use them. Automatically Appended Next Post: Calling it a black mace and modelling it such is fine, remember, you just wont get any more rules than you would with a sword.

It says it's a Power Weapon. Power Weapon tells you to look at the model. If it has a Maul, it's a Power Maul. Furthermore, the unusual part is that the Black Sword (which needn't be a Sword, as detailed in it's entry) grants it's wielded +2 Strength. As such, it could be an Unusual Power Maul that adds 2 to the wielder's Strength, for a net gain of 4 Strength.

No, if it is a power weapon WITH NO FURTHER SPECIAL RULES, you look at the model. Automatically Appended Next Post: Basically, there are 5 types of Power Weapons
Axes, Swords, Mauls, Lances and Unusual.

There is an Important situation that needs to be pointed out here:
Sometime you will have Unusual Power weapons that are also Specified as one of the Main 4 Sub-Types.
Kharn the Betrayer's Gorechild is one such weapon: Per the FAQ it is treated as a Power Axe with several other special rules.
This makes it an Unusual Power Weapon(Base Stats of: User's Strength, AP3), that then has Str+1, AP2, 2D6 Armour Penetration rolls and Strikes Models with WS on a 2+.
The End result is that we Ignore the Strength and AP of the Base Unusual Power weapon since it was replaced by the other rules.
So for unusual Power weapons you just start with the Base weapon profile and apply all the special rules, including individually replacing Strength and AP if the rules include either of those stats.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

I stared and looked at this post for 5 minutes thinking about the crazy gak a Emperor's champion could do with a mace like that, you know flip a land raider inside out, insta ko space marine's at i 5, send a monstrous creature to the hospital. Then, my dreams got ruined :(
