My gf is considering doing this. She already has a good and varied amount of Daemons and is thinking that with the new allies rules she may be able to be more competitive with Chaos Marines as allies. My question: does anyone have experience or theories with this? I'm curious what units for Daemons are viable and what from Chaos Marines would supplement them well. I myself do not have much experience with either army, so please try not to use too much shorthand when describing abilities or units.

Hi. Yes, I do. My girlfriend uses demonettes and when I play games against others I use Thousand Sons with Fateweaver and Horrors.

Fateweaver + any type of troops is perfect for CSMS who are expensive. This means that he is more cost effective when lurking around models that die easily to small arms fire such as Tsons or Noise Marines. Plague Marines don't really need the Fateweaver save re-roll bubble, for example, because they are good enough on their own without you taking Allies such as Fateweaver.

On the topic of Plague Marines, people seem to think that basic Plague Bearers are fine for the required allied Troops and Epidemius (spelling?) seems to be the popular choice because of the way he interacts with units in your CSM army that have the Mark of Nurgle special rule.

If it's a matter of competitive way, I'd say take some Flamers of Tzeentch, Epidemius and some Plague Bearers. All of these units compliment Plague Marines (which in tournaments you should be using already), and are the most cost effective in the demon book.

If she wants demonettes like my lady does, they should be paired with CSM units that like to get in close combat such as Berzerkers. This way, you'll likely be chasing enemies down to tie them up with your powerful CSM melee units so they can't shoot. Once they are tied up, Demonettes and their fragile Toughness 3 can easily lurk about without getting slaughtered by enemy shooting. They can deepstrike anywhere and contest objectives, and are generally faster than Marines in combat.

In short, Troops with an HQ is just fine as far as C:CD allies go for CSM armies. Nowadays, you need 3+ power armored squads as Troops choices if you hope to survive as CSMs, so taking too much from the Demon book removes the amount of marine bodies.

This is 100% opinion, but I would avoid spending points on Fiends, Blood Crushers, Soulgrinders, or anything else not Troops, HQ or Flamers from Codex: Demons if you're playing games less than 2000pts. This new edition is all about CSM bodies on the ground!

Hope the wall of text helps you. I had a lot of coffee. I suspect that you may already know some of the things that I posted, so hopefully it benefits others too

That was extremely helpful. Do you think she'd be better off going Chaos Marines with Daemon allies or will she be okay with Daemons bringing Chaos Marine allies? Shes's frustrated at her Dark Eldar right now(my Necrons actually made her cry....) so trying to find a way to make her Daemons good.

I have no idea which rumors will be coming true this year, but *IF* Chaos Space Marines do indeed get a new codex next month, she (or you) would save money by continuing with Demons and just buying a small amount of CSM allies. That way, she doesn't have a new CSM army invalidated by new rules.

I haven't thought much about what CSMs would be good as allies.

I suspect a simple sorcerer with Mark of Tzeentch with 2 rolls on the Telepathy Discipline would bring her a lot of joy, and take a LOT of heat off her demons. Not sure what Troops choice, but I'd say Plague Marines. Then again.... Why not just take plague bearers from the demons codex? Why ally?

Personal preference will win the day with CSMs as Allies, I think.

Any thing really good for Daemons right now? Like auto includes? Or is it a pick what you like and hope for the best army?

Fateweaver, Plague Bearers are no longer in difficult terrain when moving in the open, Flamers are just as auto-include as always (and can stand and shoot with armor-ignoring flame wall Overwatch attacks), Flying Monstrous Creatures are just..... brutal.

It is not a click-and-play army, so to speak. I think it requires a lot of finesse and I am having quite a time learning how to make my demon allies work properly, though Fateweaver helps the learning curve by still being badass.

He is pure awesomeness ... with flying and some decent ranged powers. 3++ save...

He gives off a 6" bubble that allows you to reroll any failed armor, invul, or cover save.
The main reason to take him with Ksons who have a 4++ ... they are alot more durable.

As for previously, You can go either way as CSM or Daemons. I built several lists of each...

Main problem is that with a new codex rumored around the corner it dosnt pay to invest 2 much into CSM.
Which is my main army ... so i am trying to put them on the back burner till i get a better idea of what to expect.
(Sporting a Kson army with a pair of defilers )

I'm hoping the rumor that it will be forces of chaos with the rules for daemons, traitor guard, and chaos marines all in one. If they do the traitor guard rules I'm totally going to go into debt like a boss ordering a ton of stuff for Death Corps of Kreig. Love the models Anyways He sounds crazy. Is he expensive? Are there tricks to deep striking that helps your daemons get where they need to be/survive? Also, are Icons worth bringing? I remember my GF was asking about those.

Depends on the units honestly. The best thing she can do is probably go to a forum and shoot them a list and have them rip it apart.

We have no idea what she already has/ what she is willing to invest. I know my GF might be fine using my models but refuses buying anything unless she thinks she'll like painting it.

I have been running a Daemon/CSM combo and the thing that is an absolute auto include is an Aegis Defense Line with a Comms Relay. For 70 points it gives everything behind it a 4+ save and practically guarantees that all your daemons will come in turn 2.

Shameless link to my painting blog :

idk I like it but unless you're running a fateweaver list there isn't too horrible a need to have your guys come in on turn 2.
