Is the new SM Stormtalon a good asset to have in a mechanized army concentrated on mainly tanks? Could it give the extra support to the infantry or protect the line of tanks? Or is it a easy killpoint floating in the sky?

Currently, nothing is an easy kill point when its floating in the sky. Purely because there arent many counters to fliers yet.

Okay, so that marks that out. But will it benefit a shooty army with heavy tank concentration?

I personally haven't seen anyone even consider using Stormtalons in their lists. . .but they can't be all that horrible. :I Relatively cheap, decent anti-melta armor, and the three big gun options look entertaining. That 60" gun could be very useful for taking out enemy flyers. The big gimmick it seems to have is the fact that it can come in from reserves with another unit, and I don't know how you're playing reserves, if at all, but I'd almost say it's not necessary to make use of that special rule. If you have any Stormtalons, I'd say just make use of them until they prove themselves one way or another, without worrying too bad about wins and losses. If you don't have any. . .well, I'd be afraid to drop the money on a unit that might end up useless, too. :U

EDIT: As far as tactics go, because tanks probably won't have a lot of Skyfire, and Flyers get to choose if they have Skyfire that shooting phase or not, you'll be allowing your tanks to deal with infantry and other tanks, while the Flyers do their dogfighting. Hovering is a bit of a double-edged sword, but it TECHNICALLY does make the Stormtalon more mobile than other Flyers, outside of Stormravens.

I've been using one in all of my games so far (about 10, 2 of them have been at 2k and I want more 2k games), and it hasn't been shot down or even had a hull point removed on it. My opponents keep telling me how frustrating it is to shoot it down because of how hard it is to hit. I see the Assault Cannon Typhoon Missile Launcher as being the most frequently used loadout since it allows the Stormtalon to handle any situation, and that's the current config that I'm using. I like how it performs, but it doesn't stand out in its offensive power.

For sure it's best used as cheap flying support. You either try to load up on Skyfire weapons, or you take a Stormtalon. Personally, I think a Stormtalon is a lot more useful than people are giving it credit for, seeing how awesome flyers are at the moment.

They are well worth the points.

Typhoon missile launcher puts it at 155 points. You could do alot worse.

Its basically a better Landspeeder.

Until another updated FAQ or new C:SM codex, three of these are replacing three of my dreadnoughts in my list. Unless I decide to lose the sternguard, in which case that frees up a boatload of points.

I'd like to post my counter to the storm talon: rifleman dread. Rerolling the hits for 6's and you can get 1-2 hull points off it.

I've been playing around with a 1500 point list with one armed with the skyhammer missiles, it comes in escorting shrike and a BA assault squad who are outflanking, and so far it only has been shot down once (DW missle spam), and every other game has at least killed its points, plus taken a lot of anti-tank fire that could have been better used on my rhino.

My current army has LS Typhoons. Should I replace them with some stormtalons with missiles?

I'd take both. I have a 2k list that has 4 single Typhoons and a Stormtalon.

This is going to be a 2000pt army, but I'm concentrating on armor. So I'll probably either take on or the other. Stormtalon is winning so far...

A single Stormtalon is a decent add-on to each SM army. Its a nasty surprise unit for the enemy when it arrives from reserves; outflanking brings it even closer to the enemy back field which can be quite useful due to the new deployments.

In case of more than one outflanking units, two Stormtalons can work really well since they can give decent fire support and can take away some pressure from your outflankers (on the ground).

Yes, every Flyer can skyfire.

The Stormtalon is a good buy. The best option is the Typhoon missiles as they pair well with Assault Cannons.

Hover Strike is pretty meh. Better to keep flying.

Of course if you see lots of Vendettas you might feel a little lacking.

Stormtalon with Typhoons, AV11, and can't hover = 155 pts

Vendetta with 3 TL-lascannons, transport capacity, AV12, squadronable, and can hover. = 130 pts

What the Cruddance?

I have used a Stormtalon in my 2K bikearmy and I can say that I´m not overly impressed.
Hard to move so that you can choose targets, not impressed with the fire power either.
for 180 points (25p more) you can add 2 LS Typhoon, and they put out more dakka and, for me, is easier to move for best target hunting.
