Nice!
I'm hoping to serve in an M777 team after ROTC, beautiful weapons IMO.
P.S. the article mislabeled it as an M77
Also, not to take away from the impressiveness here, why is 22 miles such an astounding range when the Excalibur round is "specially designed to maintain accuracy up to 37.5 kilometers (23.3 miles) away." ? Just wondering why you would say a round has an effective range that is longer than the current record...

Because testing is not the same as an actual combat record.
22 miles isn't especially long. Its a record for that particular field piece. The Russian 2S7 203mm Self Propelled gun was a production piece and has a range approx double that, though the Russians always did like big guns.
If you count specialist siege guns, railway guns etc then the ranges can get super long.

If Dennis Showalter is to be believed (and he probably is) then the whole reason the T-34 outgunned its German counterparts was the Russian love of really big guns
150m kill zone for a 155m tubed (M198) Actually I think its the new Oneninereight. I take it it literally hit them...ONE FOR THE REDLEGS!!!

Advertising.
Because that's probably the longest accurate shot it managed in testing. They don't position the artillery to be as far away as possible. long shots are the result of chance. They aren't ideal.

The difference is that its 22 mile with an accuracy of less then 10m, you're not getting that with much else

Also, the 2S7 has a full sized gun while the M777 is only a howitzer with a much shorter barrel, the real difference is the guided Excalibur round.

The gun was capable of hurling a 94 kilogram (210 lb) shell to a range of 130 kilometers (81 mi) and a maximum altitude of 40 kilometers (25 miles, 131,000 ft)
And it was from WW1!

Well the Paris gun it didn't matter where it hit. They just point it in the general direction, largest charge bag, and let fly or lanyard....I will not finger pop the trigger for that one

a timed charge perhaps? Set it and then run the hell away before the shockwave gives youe permanent brain damage?

You're at the zero range of the firing concussion so plugged ears will keep your hearing. Continuos firing though will degrade your hearing. As for the brain damage we know firing 4-5 AT$ one right after the other will give you a concussion. The weapon was fired 20 times per day so reload gives the head enough recovery time between shots
Seriously thinking they went for head shots on the taliban grp

Have to agree that the headline of that article is rather misleading.
So an artillery crew managed to land a hit at a range slightly shorter than the maximum of what the weaponry used is supposed to be capable of. Well ... good job?
The article should be about the Excalibur round and its interesting targeting mechanism - I have no idea why they've given it a Marine spin when the record they broke is an internal one; that the accuracy relies on technology rather than manual aim even only makes it less impressive for the operator.
Not trying to diss the USMC, but there's impressive records, and then there's hype.

Distant shooting involves deflection and elevation and charge bag thats precut depending on range. It involves the battery (8 tubes) to cover the impact area to ensure maximum damage. This was one tube for one kill. Granted it was a GPS guided round it was the FDC (Fire Directio Control) that gave the crew the numbers to put the round in its flight cone for impact. That far a shot also has to take into account earth rotation. Still this is a artillery round and not say a tomahawk missile

Ya, but what's the difference? The tech makes it sound as if it'd only be the lack of self-propulsion - which isn't necessary, as the projectile's own velocity is perfectly enough to have it "maneuverable" by foils, reacting on the coordinates it is being sent.
That said, what would interest me now is how exactly the round was guided - did they use a laser or a satellite like they do for the cruise missiles?
Point A was the tube position itself. 10 digit grid coordinate. Already programmed into the round itself
Point B a 8 digit grid coordinate. Gets the round within 10m of the target
More likely less then three satellites were being pinged in flight

Judging by the grasp of politics the average Joe has in both the US and the UK, I think Jay hasn't gone far enough!
The entire world is full of clueless feth heads who don't like taking their medicine, and I applaud him for doing his best to remind us of this fact.
I read a few years ago that 35% of British teenagers didn't know that chips were made out of potatoes!
We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.
I see no happiness in that pic.....I see diabolical revenge for letting me out in this...
