Subject: The big lie about Tyrnids and fortifications

A lot of people are misreading the rulebook and the Tyranid FAQ saying that Nids have no access to anti-flyer guns. This is simply not true. (Thanks to Coredump for pointing this out.)
The FAQ states that Tyranids can not manually fire Emplaced Weapons.
What are Emplaced Weapons? They are on pg.96. They are built in weapons that can be manually fired or use BS2 Automated fire.
So some people go "Ahh.. they can just have the guns fire at the nearest target at BS2. Not going to really help vs. flyers, but at least they can use them.
But looking at Fortifications (pg114-117) you will notice something. The Quad-gun and Icarus Lascannon are not Emplaced Weapons. They are Gun Emplacements.
Most people think they are the same, but they have different rules. Emplaced Weapons are on pg 96. Gun Emplacements are on pg 105.
What are Gun Emplacements? They are stand along guns that give a +4 cover save. Can be targeted and destroyed and MUST be fired manually.
So what is an Emplaced Weapon?
The mounted Heavy Bolters in the Bastion and Fortress. The missile launcher and twin linked Icarus lascannon.
What is a Gun Emplacement?
The Icarus lascannon and the Quad Gun.
So can anyone tell me why my Venomthropes can not use their BS4 to shoot down you flyer with a Quad-Gun?

I agree with your conclusions, though that would also mean the gun emplacements cannot use automated fire since that is unique to emplaced guns.

not really understanding the difference here between an emplaced weapon and a gun emplacement. Seems like the same damn thing. You realize tyranids don't have opposable thumbs, right?

I'm not a weapons expert, but I've fired most weapons with a finger, not a thumb.

Emplaced weapons are part of a building and can use the "Automated Fire" rule to shoot in addition to being able to be fired by a unit "embarked" in the building. Tyranids, per the FAQ can't shoot them manually.
Gun emplacements are battlefield debris (and an upgrade for the Aegis Defence line), don't have the "Automated Fire" rule and are not mentioned in the FAQ, so I see no reason why Venomthropes can't fire Lascannons

Gun Emplacements can be bought for every thing but the landing pad. Shame we can't manually fire the missile system or twinlinked cannon of the fortress, but at least those autofire.
As for thumbs most people will just mod up some gun bugs.

Is there a reason why people mention the venomthrope? Does his aura work in an aura around the building?
Anyway, how i read the rule is that we cannot shoot if we are out of synapse, it os asked along with the instinktive behavior tests.Am i the only pne reading it like that?

The FAQ says that if a Tyranid unit is "embarked" in a building it does not take instinctive behaviour tests. So they can shoot if you want them too. Being out of synapse range ceases to affect a Tyranid unit "embarked" in a building.
It further says that a Tyranid unit "embarked" in a building cannot fire the Emplaced Weapons on that building manually, which means the Emplaced Weapons can only be fired using the "Automated Fire" rule.
The Venomthrope is mentioned as it has a BS (and a fairly decent one) but no ranged weapons to shoot with.

the other reason for mentioning the venomthrope is it gives a cover save to the gun.
Also gun emplacements can not be in buildings only on them. So you would need synapse or it would just fire at the closest unit. Or run off to assault a unit if you use a venomethrope.
Maybe a prime gunner. Safer.

Doesn't matter. Codex says that they can't fire weapons anyway.

I say go for it!
Anyone who stands in the way of the Nids getting something, anything is a tard. The Nids are a non competitive army and need all the help they can get.
What could be argued as one of the bottom 3 armies needs all the tricks it can get.

Not bottom rung anymore. I have played a few 6th ed. Games and so far I have crushed most opponets. Biggest problem so far is flyer spam.

Your the guy who told me. I just figured if Dakka couldn't find a reason I can't I can go ahead and build Bug City.
Might scale it down to a bastion though. To much on the fortress I can't use.
And I am looking at biovores as shooters as they have lurk and they are cheap BS4.

Fortunately there is already a picture of a Tyranid Bastion you can use as an idea. Forgot who has it as part of their sig, but here is the link:

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
