Subject: WYSIWYG and the controversial Power Axe

Steadfast Grey Hunter
|
I run a C:SM army, and am trying my best to adhere to WYSIWYG. I have a pesky METAL marine with a power axe I just cant seem to find a home for. Ive narrowed it down to having him as either a Tac squad sgt or an assault marine sgt. Unfortunately I do not posses the hardware or skills to cut up this metal model so I am just going to find a spot he can do some work in.
I know it depends on the type of work my squads will do, but just some extra info: I have 4 tac squads 1 of which will be a flamer squad and the others 3 will consist of 2 plasmas/1melta or vis versa. The assault squad will be a small 5 man "suicide unit" with a flamer.
I know its a very small detail, but unfortunately I want to finalize everything before its all glued together and need help from the oh-so-knowledgeable-dakkaites. Ideas on where to put this bum? Thanks!

Don't cut him up. Vintage models rule!
I'd put him in the assault squad. I'd take a free S6 I1 hit in an assault squad with Hammer of Wrath letting him go at I10 than a power fist that costs points. The tactical squad wouldn't get the use as much, better to put a Power Fist if you're worried about a dreadnought.

I dont HAVE to, but he would put my army total (as far a marine bodies go) at 45... 4x10 tac squads and 1x5 as.squad. =P

Hammer of Wrath attacks are made at base strength, so he'd get one I10 attack at S4 then his normal attacks at I1 with S6.

Forgive my ignorance, but isn't a Power axe +1S? so the assault marine would strike at S5?

Hammer of wrath is ALWAYS at base strength, with an AP of -.
It represents you slamming into the ground/enemy with momentum.

Same as a power weapon, plus you get an extra attack from a pistol... Much more affordable than the mighty powerfist.

There was an argument recently regarding banshees and poweraxes. Their masks should give them i10 first round of combat, bit the wording for the poweraxe would mean it always strikes only had initiative step 1.

Right, hence why some people are annoyed at MFA players feilding, say, DC with power axes. 5 strength 6 attacks at WS5...each. Throw in a reclesiarch for re-rolls to hit and wound for good measure

Yeah so you roll off for it. I can't remember what page in the book it it, where it talks about set modifiers and if two collide then you roll off.

Reclusiarchs (and all other Chaplains for that matter) only work on units from their own Codex due to FAQs. Furthermore, two Power Axes don't stack, as you're only swinging with one.

Death Company have Furious Charge, so they swing their axes at S6 on the charge. Blood Angels get Reclusiarchs. Death Company and Sanguinary Guard went from being horribly overpriced to being very solid hammer units.

I think poweraxes are great. A good easy way to get ap2 without losing an attack. Extra strength helps, too. I'd take A Poweraxe any day over a Power sword, in most cases.

I dont see it as MFA. The book says to look at the power weapon to see what it is, If its a dagger (power bayonets lol) or sword its a sword, Ax is an ax ect. I personally like the look of a sword over an ax, so I will still keep swords, even if Str 4 guardsmen would be nice

Nor do I see it as MFA. If you want your entire death company to go last, please go right ahead. Power spears are better for death company, with a few axes and a fist. Even still, a death star is a death star.

It's not really a death star at 350 points for 10 models.
It's MFA becuase certain troops become a lot more powerful than they were intended to be. Anything in my guard army that had a PW would strike last anyway, so why bother giving them swords when they get +1 strength from the axe? This is a benefit that higher initiative models don't get unless they want to forgo that advantage.
