So I won't need to worry if my guy doesn't look like he has what I loaded him out with? I guess the game is pretty loose with the WYSIWYG? (why does it feel like I've asked this already?)

This is true. It's more because that a lot of the load outs don't have models yet. If does already have a model then it depends more on your group if they will let you proxy things.

I have to disagree with the original statement, and instead offer this alternative: "Infinity is difficult to play WYSIWYG if you want access to all the troop loadouts."
Beyond a few unit types which thus far have no miniatures of any loadout and no official artwork (and thus no known appearance), it's possible (if not easy) to convert all the missing loadouts.
However - yes. Infinity is usually more flexible about WYSIWYG. You must bear in mind though, you have to tell your opponent exactly what unit and equipment each miniature that's placed on the table is (except for "hidden" things like if they're the Lt, or if they're actually a model disguised with a Holoprojector), and it is always best if you use the closest model you can though, or you'll get sick of "Which unit is that supposed to be again?" very fast.

Where we play, we're pretty lenient with WYSIWYG. A model with a boarding shotgun could easily be said to have a combi rifle or a multi-rifle because the weapons are generally the same size and shape.
As long as you adhere to base size, model size, and if the model is generally armed with what it's supposed to be (a Keisostsu with a missile launcher could be a Zhanshi with a missile launcher for example), then you're pretty much okay.

In our group, as long as the unit type is the same then the individual load out is not too much of a problem. We announce load outs as we deploy so any proxies/non WYSIWYG's are identified at the battle start.

Besides, the game only requires a handful of models. At least it makes proxying much easier to remember.

Yes right. TBH the game, even officially, is quite lenient with this kind of thing. YMMV in various gaming groups, but if they are following CB's recommendation then they should let most things be proxied. My friend is even using a socket wrench as a Netrod for the time being for instance

Section 9's (on the infinity site) idea of Golf Tees on a base made me lol when i read that for the first time. But its not a bad proxy given it looks a fair bit like one.

I've made conversions of some figures INTO other types, just because I'm either not overly fond of the actual figures - OR I already have one of them and would prefer a non-clone for the other - and by the "official rules" that would be a no-no (I could do it for an UNreleased model, but if the model exists, I'm supposed to use it).
I haven't hit any issues at tourneys here yet. The scene is still to young for that kind of anal-retentive dickery to have gained a foothold yet. We've had people using Aconte Regulars as Fusiliers (they're BOTH LI models, and both from the same faction - but they were only ever used as Fusiliers, even when they were allowed to use Regs in the same sectorial). They are usually representative with weapons, though and as noted, people tend to tell each other what it is when deployed, so it's not like it's confusing.

Off Topic: Do I have to worry about any arcs of vision (front, rear, flank, etc.)? I want to mark the bases of my miniatures accordingly.

Yes for most models, they can only react (in the form of an automatic reaction order - or ARO) to things which happen in their LOS to the front 180 degrees. There are some exceptions to this; notably something happening within 8" of a unit in its 'zone of control' (you can react - I guess it means they hear the other model, a sensory node/proximity warning makes them aware etc.), and on other occasions skills such as '6th sense lvl 2' and one of the martial arts skills (I forget which - maybe lvl4?) lets you ignore some of these rules.
It can kind of be important on occasion, especially with a few of the more dynamically posed models. In my games we have usually said that the facing direction of the models head represents the front, or the facing of the body chest if it is a more odd pose.

Front arc is the important one (unless the units has 360* vision) as most units only have 180* LoF arcs. There is only front/rear. No side arcs to worry about.
If I shoot at you from inside your rear arc - you don't GET an ARO unless you survive the armor roll (or I miss) - barring a special rule or piece of equipment (like sixth sense).

Mark your arcs or prepare to get farked! It really helps to have them painted on your base, especially when some of your figs are doing headstands etc. Otherwise, the default is that you use the actual direction of their head. As a side-note, if your model has an awkward sword-pointing pose that makes taking cover difficult, you might want to nominate a different arc as "front".

Y'know, I really don't think it will, either. Without the policies of a jerky corporation (cough* GW*cough) to back them up, the anal-retentive folks don't have a leg to stand on and the rest of us easygoing players can let things be a bit loose.

It does seem to be a lot more open to proxies! For instance there is an example in the rulebook where a Hac Tao is sneaking up on a dude using his TO Camo. But the actually model they use is sold as a Hsien.
I don't have a problem with proxies but I do like to at least see the model represented by something similar. Such as the above example. But if someone wanted to use a Zhanshi as a Hac Tao or use a dude with a Rifle as a Missile Launcher I'd be a little less happy with that. Mainly cause it spoils the effect of the game for me. Also its a bit tight when you're legging it from cover thinking you can dodge that Zhanshi with a Combi Rifle but oh wait you forgot he's a Tiger Soldier with a HMG!
But i would probably let it go anyway cause they've payed the posts cost and I'm generally a cool guy and it's only a game!

Because of the wide range of weapons out there almost all players will say using a boarding shotgun as a combi-rifle is acceptable
