I have a solid 1500 space wolves army but id like to make additions. Should i only have a rune priest or a wolf lord? Or should i forget the additions and keep both?

The rune priest is the more powerful model though running both is very fluffy for SW.

Hmmm....good question.

I've been running at least one rune priest but I get so tired of people whining about them. Lately, I've been playing with a Wolf Lord (or WGBL) in terminator Armor and a Wolf Priest.

It's fun to change it up every once in a while and I really enjoyed converting my Wolf Priest.

If you have to just take one, take a Rune Priest with Living Lightning and another power of your choice. An unlimited range S7 D6 shot weapon does wonders for nailing flying jetbikes and landspeeders. Also, the psychic defence is very handy.

If you can take both, take both. Thunderwolves are very good for Wolf Lords.

This. Especially this. Rune priests can adapt to the given situation much better. A wolf lord or a WGBL is only going to pay for himself if he gets into CC. However, Wolf Priests have become a lot better (read versatile) too. Preferred enemy now works for shooting and CC and lets you re-roll all dice of 1 to Hit AND to wound. Plus he makes a unit fearless, which actually means something now.

But on the other hand, Wolf Lords embody the SW fluff really well.

Ok normaly I don't advertise this, but if you follow my link in my Sig, I just added Rune Priest to my Space Wolf Synergy Thread. This way I don't have to take up to much here.
I would still like to have this discusion here so the subject can be looked at in detail.

If you're hurting for points I'd usually say go Rune Priest. But a Wolf lord is a deadly foe. Especially if you throw him on a TW and join him to your TWC. If you put a few points into him, it's really nasty what he does in CC. If you're playing a more close quarters or shooty army, he's ok to drop.
I used to avoid him completely tbh. I'd use 1 rune priest and a wolf priest. I've found adding the TW lord is really useful though.

after playing with RP's and Njal for 150-200 games in 5th, I'm kind of bored of them TBH....they are a little OP'd and make you play defensively.

I would say this

1) if you plan to play alot of Eldar or GK's, go with the RP's. His ability to Null psychic powers on 4+ within 24" will mess your opponent up.
2) If you have an interest in doing any outflanking to be more aggressive take the Lord (or priest..who is better TBH for 30 points more) then go for the Lord/Priest
3) If you have enough points...do both, it's fluffy and effective

Rune priest is a walking psychic weapon thats great for poping light vehicles, he's got the best ability to shut down other psykers in the game with a far bigger range.

That said he's not a CC monster like the lord is, you'll need to keep the rune priest protected or lose him pretty easily, stick him close to some long fangs perhaps to add his S7 lightning attacks to their missile barrages.

Lords speak for themselves really being able to slaughter most things in combat, but if thats your thing why not include canis wolfborn? he's fast on his mount has a nice number of attacks with his wolfclaws and has no fear of large groups as that actually gives him more attacks, and he's under 200pts.
