This came up in a game I played recently where I faced SW and had forgotten they do not inherently have a character in a unit of Grey Hunters and since my opponent didn't have an WG attached to them I could not challenge him since he had noone to accept. This got me thinking, is it currently better to still have a WG attached to Grey Hunters, or is it better to have them without a character and protect them from possible anti-character shenanigans?

I think it is, from a tactical point of view of the SW player. If your squad of GH gets charged with an average opposing squad, but with a combat orientated character then you challenge with your WG. Yes, he is gonna bite it, but if you don't then most of your unit dies that turn. This leaves the rest of one of the most capable troops units in the game to deal with their opponents with impunity for at least that turn, and next turn you may be able to salvage some of tehm

Somewhere Ironic

The Wolfguard's purpose is mainly +1 attack, and +1 Leadership. If losing him is a pain, you may consider not taking him at all, since there seems to be a dozen ways of killing specific models these days.

Then again, a WG in terminator armor with a storm shield is interesting; he can be used to absorb quite a bit of anti-MEQ weaponry from the rest of your squad.

I've been debating on whether or not I should take one. What's off putting is that Rhinos can't fit 11 troops, heh.

I'm going to keep my Wolf Guard, I need him for his combi-weapon, plus the additional Leadership is often a godsend. However, I'm going to spend less points on them - maybe a combi-weapon + power weapon.
